Constipated Baby

Posted by blissy [4.1399] on January 02, 2006 at 02:52:27:

My little one is constipated for the last couple of days since starting on solids.

I am not sure whether to use the plain, psyllium husk from the health food store (metamucil has all these nasty additives, such as aspartame, and fdc yellow food colouring etc etc), also it says on the psyllium husk packaging not to use under the age of 2. When I checked with the pharmacist, she says it's too strong to use on an infant, but inthe archives it says it's okay.

I have given him some prune juice and he seems a bit better.

Would it be okay to use the psyllium husks on a 6 month old??? the pharmacist said it can be very gassy in an infant

Also, he doesn't like to drink water, so it's a bit of a battle trying to get it down, and I know it's really important to have enough fluids with constipation.
any ideas on how to encourage him to drink more water???

TIA

M

Hi Blissy,

The baby is no fool.. What is his favourite drink?
Try dilluting that with water to fool him.
Gradually, get it down to 25% juice and he may still
enjoy it. A bit of sugar and salt can also keep a drink interesting. (Babies need electrolytes too.)

If he is on whole milk recently, that can be the cause of constipation. Too much bread can also block things up.

thanks ron.

got a good amount of water/diluted prune juice into him today. I ended up resorting to using a syringe to do it. He thinks its all a big game though! lol. Mama has to be prettee inventive, except when it comes to his food, and then he just eats like a horse! ;-)

Blissy,

The main reason I recommend psyllium husks is because they are cheapo. There are many other options. Yesterday you mentioned that your pharmacist had recommended an alternative.

Hi Bliss,
How about glicerin suppositores? You can get them at the pharmacies.

In what way are you giving your baby his probiotics?

I find the probiotics keep my baby from being constipated. However, at one point I was dissolving the probiotic powder in water and the baby became a bit plugged up before I figured out that apparently the water I was dissolving the probiotics in was destroying them. I went back to the way I had been giving it to him, in his formula.

I also give it to him in his first bottle of the morning which seems to work best.

Hope this helps in some way.

salt constipates. When constipated, you use less salt, more potassium.

My infant went though this after starting solids from about 6 mos. to 10-11 months before his system seemed to regulate. I nursed him a lot, gave him prunes or apples daily, and encouraged water from a sippy cup (he thought it as a game). I also added a probiotic daily. This things helped a great deal. Good luck to you.

I am not sure how using plain cooled water would destroy the probiotics?????? That's what I have been using plus he is a breastfed baby.

Hi Bliss,
Sometime ago before you had your baby someone recommended a book for infants. My daughter is
due to have her baby soon and I wanted to get that
book for her.

I am not sure either. Just saw that the baby was not having his regular as clockwork bm in the morning. I started going back to everything I had been doing and figured out what I had changed and it was something so simple. I had been putting the probiotic in his formula after the formula was mixed. I had changed that for some reason and had put it in the water before mixing in the powdered formula. So I went back to putting the probiotic in the formula after it was mixed and unbelievably, he went back to his old routine. I can only assume the probiotic was being destroyed some way, some how, by putting it in water. (I'm using Natren's Healthy Start.)

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Thank you Alexandria. ;o) What a valuable book! Fussy babies seem to run in our family, or, are all babies fussy? Is there really such a thing as a mellow baby?

that is an EXCELLENT book, Barb. Really helped tremendously, and gave us new parents those long desired "sleep through nights" with bub sleeping through at a very young age. He sta4rted sleeping through the night at 2 months old.

also, get her to look out for a book called "baby love". Also another goodie. Plus there is an excellent baby info. site called "the baby whisperer". Lots of excellent info there. Recommend it to her.
