Perioral Dermatitis

Posted by Nichol on May 22, 2002 at 10:38:34:

Dear Dr. Stoll,
I tell you, after reading all the information posted on this site about perioral dermatitis, I am just sick I didn't know about this site sooner. I was diagnosed with POD 5 years ago. I was 24 at the time. The dermatologist I saw said this was something rare that happened only to women my age, and that in his own professional opinion he thought that I was allergic to toothpaste. To make a long story short, he put me on antibiotics for months as well as Dermatop. He told me I would be on these meds for a long time. Of course, taking the antibiotics for that long caused it's own problems, but being on Dermatop for more than a year (with no follow up) was much more damaging. At the time I saw him, I had a red rash that would come and go and would be accompanied by tiny blisters all around my mouth and chin. At this point, my skin has thinned, and I have this bulbous like acne on both sides of my mouth that just never go away. I'm at my wits end, and almost fear going back to a Dermatologist because of all the stress this has caused. I guess I'm just wondering if there is anything that can be done about these side effects from the Dermatop. I can't stand my face looking like this, and feel I would have been better off if I'd NEVER seen a Dermatologist in the first place. You said yourself that this is not rocket science. Why is it then, that any Dermatologist I've seen seems to be baffled by the whole thing? It just sickens me. Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Nichol.

I have said many times, on this BB, that in MY opinion, dermatologists are the poorest trained specialty in medicine.

You would have been better off to not have ever seen this dermatologist--even the dermatologist must see that by now!

My suggestion would be to immediately start a serious wellness program while stopping all "treatment". Prepare yourself for about a year (it may not take that long) without treatment--which has done you serious harm anyhow--and let us know how you do.

See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then use the archives. Get a free wellness protocol on the home page "How to get Healthy".

This is a lot of work but cannot possibly harm you and has at least a chance of not only resolving the problem but eventually repairing the damage done by the treatment.

Let us know how you do as you progress.

Walt
