HELP! Perioral Dermatitis

Hi Dr. Stoll,

I have had perioral dermatitis on and off for about 4 years. Until a few months ago I had never gone to a dermatologist and had always been treated with antibiotics by my general doctor. This time when I saw the derm. he first started me off with a hydrocortison cream and something called ELIDEL and doxycyclin. I got a bit better in the first week and then it just got worse and worse. Finally I stopped using the creams and changed the antibiotic to Zithromax. i'm a little better now but still have red spots all around my mouth and chin. i have started using tea tree oil and it has helped a little and i have changed all my soaps etc. the SLS-free ones. Every morning I wake up and it sees to get better but by the end of the day i have more red spots and painful blisters. I don't know what to do. i have even changed my toothpaste to a fluoride and SLS free one.
Are there any other tips you can give me??
Will my skin be scarred from this?
Thank you in advance for your advice, i appreciate it.
Sara

You need to dig into the archives and start a wellness program. You need to eat a whole foods diet, practice SR, and exercise daily. For me the SR was the largest part. I needed to get the stress out of my life. To date, I rarely have an outbreak (maybe a bump or two) unless I am experiencing stress. I am a firm believer that stress causes all kinds of health issues. Also, find a natural doc to do an evaluation on you and make sure you are not sensitive to any foods. I found out that I have a grain sensitivity. Thus, when I eat too many grains, I start experiencing all kinds of side effects - bumps on my face included.

Hi Sara,
I have not had it as long as you, but I will tell you what works. The only thing that really works in my book - is, SR.
Tea Tree Oil does help a bit TOPICALLY but the rash is coming from an INTERNAL source.... cut out sugars and caffine, start or INCREASE the quality of SR, and you will kick it. I had it for months - for the most part, it was only bad the first couple of months until I researched...and it was my own figuring out to alkalize the body and relax that helps. I did just recently have a panic attack and the pod came back for a day after it....that to me was a learning experience to show me that my hunch was correct . Stress.

Hi Sara,

I was diagnosed with POD last February, and the doc tried to put me on an 8 week course of antibiotics. This was after he told me that it wasn't a bacterial infection! I promptly tore the prescription up when I left the office and went home to my computer and typed in "Perioral Dermatitis". That's how I found Dr. Stoll, and that's how I got rid of my POD!

Definitely start doing SR, definitely cut sugar, and keep using the Tea Tree Oil. It got rid of my POD within two weeks. I dabbed a little on in the morning, and a lot on at night and it cleared it right up. Now I use a face lotion that contains tea tree oil and I haven't had a single flare-up since.

And if you're on birth control pills - try to get off of them ASAP! They feed the candida that causes POD in the first place!

Best of luck to you, Sara, and if you want to email me to talk about it, let me know. I didn't have anyone to talk to about it when I went through it, and I'd be more than happy to chat.

Maggie

I just started SR this week though I've had POD for a year, and known abotu Dr. SToll for a few months, I was pretty half-assed at the SR. Now I am serious and I also acquired a GSR. MY POD is more of a combo of rosacea and dermatitis. BUT judging from the amazing way I feel now from the SR and the resolve I have to get rid of this skin disorder which I know is a direct sign of my deep-rooted stress, i am confident. Make sure you make SR the consistent factor. Mary, how long before you saw a change?

Thank you all for you advice and comments. I really hope this goes away.,..i feel like it's controlling my life. I am a very stressed peron and I guess i need to work on my SR. Any tips on how to start? I don't sleep enough and suffer from a lot of anxiety....it may well be the cause of all this.

Thanks again for everything.

I blended traditional with alternative treatment. I used an antibiotic to initially get rid of it as I stepped my wellness program up. It went away with the antibiotic (I also used a probiotic along with it) and then never came back. As I stated though, if I get stressed out, I see a bump or two. Also, if I eat too many grains (because I am sensitive to them) I get a bump or two. I just do additional SR and/or lay off the grains and I have a clear face again. I also think adding the EFAs have helped tremendously.

You may want to try visualization whilst doing your meditation, in order to clear the dermatitis.

HI Maggie,

Thanks for all your advice. I'm going to try and get a book to teach me how to do SR because i have no idea how to approach the whole thing. About cutting out sugar, do you mean just refined sugars or like natural sugar as well? like in fruit?
Thanks again,

Sara

Hi Michele,
Alkalize the body? Could you expand on that? Thanks for all your advice.

Hi Sara,

I didn't have the willpower to cut out carbs, but I eliminated as much refined sugar as possible. The occasional piece of fruit is okay, but just stay away from desserts and sweet snacks and stuff. And make sure you're getting plenty of sleep at night. I think a contributing factor of my POD was that my body was just so run down from not sleeping more than four or five hours a night.

Let everyone know how you do with SR. Oh - and if you're not already taking any probiotics, try ThreeLac. It's a great one. And drink acidophilus milk - if you're a milk drinker!

thanks maggie.
I just bought the book that Dr. Stoll recommended for learning SR.
I'll let you know how it goes. So far the tea tree oil has been
helping...but it makes my skin dry.

Thanks again,

Sara
