hey there. my dermatologist recently diagnosed me as having pod. hes got me using metro creme .75%. & now my face is worse (2nd day). prior to that my general doctor had me using hydrocortisone 2.5 %. is my face worse due to the switching of the ointment?. i also have a condition called vulvodinya & use clobetasol from time to time as needed. could there be a link between the two syndromes?? please advise!

Hi, Julie.

Your dermatologist just switched you to a more expensive form of cortisone!

Vulvodynia is directly related to bracing of the pelvic muscles and POD is directly related to LGS which is related to generalized bracing.

Start by learning about LGS and bracing (home page, glossary and archives) and then go to the POD archives. Let us know what you learn.

I had POD and only followed an md's advice after realizing it was bunk.
I had POD for almost 8 months...look at the archives and check out my posts...
POD/Michele

I've been clear from it for almost 5 months now, to the point that people tell me my face looks GREAT. People ask me how my skin is so youthful (I'm 36) and clear....
It's all about wellness and it's all about natural products - Tea Tree Oil and Johoba Oil... NO SOAP (it's drying) ....I personally don't feel that one has an SLS sensitivity if it's only on one side of the face... one way to check this is by putting your toothpaste on your inner elbow... if after 48 hours there is a reaction, ok, you are. If not, it's not something so external as toothpaste.
I use toothpaste often (I find baking soda is best to clean teeth) and regular shampoos and my skin looks great... after 8 horrible months not knowing what to do.
I'd stop the prescribed meds asap..they are not doing a thing! Buy tea tree oil...at first you may have to have water to dilute it, it can be drying..plus in the beginning you'll need to apply it 2-3 times a day. It will look worse before it's better... but don't worry ....follow Wellness and this will be a memory/learning experience.

A diagnosis of POD is what brought me to Dr. Stoll's site, and I don't know what I would have done without it. My dermatologist tried to put me on six weeks of tetracycline along with topical metro lotion, and I went home and looked up POD on the net and found this site.

I promptly tore up the prescriptions.

Definitely listen to Michelle. It was her advice that helped get rid of my POD. Tea Tree oil is a godsend, and helped to get rid of the POD while I worked on getting a routine of skilled relaxation and the whole foods diet. Also - if you are taking birth control pills, they make POD flareups much, much more common. Also cause Candida to multiply like crazy - if you're on 'em, get off 'em!

Most importantly, try not to stress out too much about it. As a woman, I was devastated by this diagnosis, when the doctor told me that it could take YEARS for it to go away, with nonstop rounds of antibiotics and steroid creams. A lot of women end up with permanent scarring from the thinning of the skin where steroid creams are applied.

Be thankful that you found this site - it saved my face, and taught me how to be a healthier person.

Hang in there, check out the archives on POD, and let everyone know how you're doing.

Best of luck on your road to wellness!

Mary Margaret

First of all, though on the site and this string I mention the exacts of POD, I did not go into something MM did...how you feel, especially as a woman. I know that men also feel horrible but women are often judged on looks, and even if you don't feel that way, to an extent it's a society thing... so here goes the best I can do.
I heard of people only going out with friends to the movies (it's dark) and so on...with POD, so they felt no one was looking at their faces. I totally understand this.
I didn't even want my husband to look at me. I went out less. Let me preface with, I was coming from a background where I worked on-air nationally and locally (tv) and was in pageants... so looks were not only a vanity thing, but a money thing for me as well.
I was a mess for months. It took me learning to like myself with or without POD. I had read that some people had it for years. I had to get it into my head that IF I had it for years, how was I going to live with this "face rot" as I called it.
It was then that I stopped focusing on how I looked and who I was MORE.
In a nutshell, POD was a great thing for me. If not for POD, I would not have found this site, found myself, and began wellness - inside and out.
It's hard to have POD, especially if you've never had a skin problem. It's your body showing you that things are way off balance. Your skin is an organ - and this large organ of yours is off kilter. You can't treat it with vanity, the way even a dermatologist does to an extent...you have to look at it like, "this is my body and I want it to be healthy, inside and out - and accept it"
When yo do that, things will start to fall in place a little more. Don't apologize for the POD or explain it to someone unless they ask....or you feel open enough. It's a condition, not a fault.

Actually Dr. Stoll, there is no cortizone in Metrolotion.

Julie,
I am sorry that I did not write earlier, but I didn’t see your post until now. I had POD a year and a half ago and it is now gone. I had it so bad that it was around my nose and eyes, as well as my mouth. I looked horrible! Anyway, what I did was took a round of Tetracycline and used Metrolotion (Metrolotion does not contain cortisone – stay away from cortisone on your face – in fact using the cortisone in the past was possibly one of the reasons you got POD in the first place. The same thing happened to me.) Anyway, this protocol got rid of it initially. I followed up with a wellness program of eating a whole foods diet, exercising daily, and doing skilled relaxation (which I did anyway). The POD only tries to come back (a bump or two) when I am under stress. I truly believe that the number one instigator of POD is stress. I had to quit things that I was doing in order to get the stress out of my life, but let me tell you, it was well worth it. I now have realized other health issues disappear as well. If you have stress in your life, don’t make excuses for it – get rid of it. I tend to believe that many people actually live in a state of stress and are so used to it that they don’t even realize that they are stressed until physical things start to happen.

My whole point is, don’t be afraid to combine conventional medicine with natural methods if that is your choice. Use the conventional to get rid of it and use the natural to keep it away. It worked for me. Oh – one more thing, if you do decide to take an antibiotic, make sure you also take a probiotic along with it and for sometime afterwards to replenish the “good bacteria” that you will be killing off.

Good Luck and God Bless!

Dr. Stoll,
Metrolotion, Metrogel, and Metrocream are all medications that are used to treat rosacea. It is basically a topical antibiotic. POD responds to this medication as long as it is not out of control. If the POD is out of control, it doesn't do much good. Basically I think that if one needs to use an antibiotic initially to get rid of POD as they change their lifestyle, that is fine. The problem is when they rely on using the antibiotic over and over again since then more serious problems happen to the body.

You can read about metrolotion on their website:
