Hi.
Two months ago I came looking here for help with my diagnosed perioral dermatitis and found a lot of good answers. I wanted to share what worked for me. My POD was a bright red rash only around my lips--LOOKED like I licked my lips all the time and appeared VERY chapped. Nearly daily (especially after lunch) my lips themselves would begin to peel off. Not painful but strange. The skin around my lips would peel like a sunburn peel. Dermatologist wanted me on antibiotics. I sought help here instead. One person suggested Tea Tree oil and calendula. Here's what worked for me:
-I bought over the couter stuff called Lysine Plus put out by Quantum available at many drug stores. It's actually a cold sore ointment but contains tea tree oil, calendula and other herbal stuff. I beliee this was a MAJOR factor in clearing up my POD.
-Aquaphor. Another OTC product my dermatologist recommended. Keeps the area hydrated. Good, but not as healing as Lysine Plus.
-Acupuncture. I already knew I had gut problems so the info here on leaky gut was no surprise. My acupuncture dr. immediatly noted that most lesions, rashes, sores etc. around the mouth are related to gut--specifically (he says) the ileocecal valve. For more info on that, search the web and read--could make a world of difference for many odd other ailments you have... OR see Dr. Ed Steel in Charlotte NC.
-Obviously stop the toothpaste thing. I just brush good with water only.
-Finally my other major thing was NO SALT, SPICES or vinegar stuff (like Italian dressing or pickles). I ate nothing with added salt. I could tell immediately that salt and spices burned the area. Pepper or anything the slightest bit spicy made for a sure lip peel and bright red lips. Keep in mind, my POD surrounded my lips but I thot perhaps others with POD on other areas of face might not feel the immediate reaction to salt and spices but it could be a major irritant they are unaware of.
-Swish mouth with lemon juice. Someone on this site recommend that. I did it several times. Didn't hurt but not sure it helped.
-Relaxation breathing. I'd lay in bed in morning, consciously relax with deep breathing. After lunch I'd lay down, rest, deep breathing. Any time I found myself in a stressful situation, I'd recognize it as such, try to back off, regain composure and breath deep. Driving was also a good time to take deep relaxing breaths.
I hope this help/encourages someone as much as the site did for me. I saw 50% immediate improvement by stopping toothpaste and took about 6 weeks to completely clear up the redness with the other things. I'm back to salt but am still not ready for any Mexican food...

The lemon juice helped because it will alkalize...your POD is a highly acid body due...for me, it was stress/high sugar during a short time (1 month)...
You need to look into the POD archives and check out how to balance your ph and to do some serious meditation or "sr" as it is coined on this site.

Thanks, Ginger.
Please let us know how you are doing in about a year.

Michele,
Why would you tell her what she NEEDS to do when she already cured it and is giving a testimonial. She doesn't NEED to do what you did just because it worked for you. Michele, you are the most arrogant person on the board.

Agree! Michele is incredibly arrogant. On top of that, she can't read or comprehend. That's another part of her problem.
