I have just returned from another visit with a Dermatologist that has diagnosed me with POD. Her treatment is 6 months of antibiotics and then a smaller dose to maintain. This will be the 3rd course of antibiotics in a year.
While reading some of the postings I found mention of Sodim Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) as a possible cause. ALL information about ANY possible treatments will be great. I willing to try anything but antibiotics again. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Perioral dermatitis is the reason I found this message board. A month ago, I had a nasty-looking outbreak of it on most of my face. In the past when I've had outbreaks they have always been related to some clearly awful stressful situation in my life, and they cleared up when the stress was over. But there isn't any unusual stress in my life right now, so I was pretty puzzled by the condition of my face. It was getting worse and worse, and then a few weeks ago I found the archives here with Google, and now I have mostly clear skin with just a couple of little irritated spots.
Here's what I've been doing differently:
1) SLS-free shampoo. For two years I'd been using a shampoo containing sodium cocyl glutamate. A few weeks before my outbreak started I switched to an SLS shampoo from my hairstylist. Now I'm using a totally detergent-free shampoo from Aubrey Organics.
2) meditation using CDs from brainsync.com, often visualizing clear skin and asking for inspiration for what I need to do to get clear skin
3) washing my sheets and towels frequently in hot water (based on an inspiration following meditation)
4) avoiding skin care products and cosmetics with unpronouncable ingredients
5) using a tea tree oil ointment on my face every day or two, sparingly...I think it helps but it also really dries out my skin.
Before this all started I was already doing the diet and exercise legs of the three-legged stool, and using SLS-free toothpaste.
I'd like to say Thank You to Walt for creating this wonderful source of health information on the web, and Good Luck to you Mandy in finding your own personal combination of remedies to get your skin clear again.

I found that the real issue was not SLS --a healthy body is fine with SLS...
I HAD pod and kicked in in 8 months - started seeing improvement in weeks of meditation and stress reduction.
I currently eat whatever I want, use whatever I want (products) and manage my stress differently...and my skin looks great.

Been there done that, and open to sharing the ups and downs.
