Aaron,
type perioral dermatits in the search box of your browser. Here is the first entry that came back on mine.
An inflammation of the skin (with itching, redness, and possibly skin lesions) surrounding the mouth. This is common in children, and may be "epidemic" in a classroom. In children it is most often caused by licking of the lips with a circular motion of the tongue. The behavior, and subsequently the dermatitis, resolve spontaneously.
Perioral dermatitis in adults is a different type of condition than that seen in children. The exact cause is not known but there may be a relationship to fluoride and other substances.
Perioral dermatitis can be caused by cosmetic allergy or steroid use on the face.

Thanks, John!
It can also be caused by toothpaste. For the solution to THAT---if that is a cause--call toll free: (877) 718-0718 and tell them I suggested them to you.

Hi, Aaron.
Listen to John (Thanks, John.) Also see my note in response to his note.
There is NO similarity between Herpes Simplex Type I and Perioral Dermatitis. ANY competent physician can make that distinction!
Go to the glossary and see if there is a picture of Herpes Type I. If there is not, you can get your public librarian (Reference Section) to show you a color atlas of dermatological conditions and you can make your own diagnosis. This is NOT rocket science!
Let us know what you learn.

Here's a new thought. In Florida we saw alot of perioral dermatitis in dogs due to plastic water bowls. Just changing to a more inert container usually solved the problem. Allergies and sensitivities can come from all sources.

This is for everybody who has (or knows someone who has) perioral dermatitis:
It is now established that a very common contributing factor, to perioral dermatitis, is stuff in your toothpaste.
Call Dr Ed Cutler in PA, at [toll free] (877) 718-0718 for articles about that and for information as to how to deal with it.
Let us know how you do.
