Peri-Oral Dermatitis

I have been battling this rash for two years! I have taken a lot of the medications used to treat it. steroids, antibiotics-tetracycline, doxycycline, topical lotions. I still have it! Currently, I am using two medications to suppress the symptoms; Clyndamacine topical lotion and Elocon cream. My face is "addicted" to the elocon and when ever I don't use it the rash gets worse. I am Allergic to the tetracyclines, I became ill while taking them, and was not able to finish treatment. What can I do to make this go away once and for all?

Christine,

See the notes and responses to them, about this, over the past few days.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Christine,

I had Peri-Oral Dermatitis for years, and was prescribed various medications to treat it, including tetracycline, cortisone, etc., and was told to stop using skin creams containing lanolin. However, the dermatitis never went away. My dermatitis was usually confined to my chin, below the corners of my mouth, but would occasionally flare up at the corners of my nose. This past Christmas, I read an article about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a common additive to soaps, shampoos, and toothpastes. SLS is a harsh cleaning agent that is added to products to increase their lather or sudsing -- kind of like food coloring, only SLS causes bubbles. However, SLS is a known skin irritant and is used in clinical trials to induce dermatitis. After reading the article, I stopped using any facial products that contain SLS. My dermatitis quickly went away, and I have been dermatitis-free for the first time in nearly 20 years! I use facial wash and toothpaste (Dentarome brand) made by Young Living (http://www.yleo.com). There are other companies that make SLS-free products, and I suspect you can find these on the Web by searching for SLS.

Sincerely,

Scott Sillett
