Hi Walt,
This is from an earlier post, I was hoping you could answer:
"I went to the archives on this... and found a photo someone had posted of a male with this condition (perioral dermatitis). It looked to me like bad acne, and I got to wondering how do we distinguish between the two?
I have noticed, as a person with acne, that sometimes my breakouts are concentrated around the lips (starts as whiteheads, then worse), especially when I use any new type of lip balms. I'm wondering if peri-oral dermatitis can look at first like whiteheads (although I've never had it as bad as the poor fellow in the photo)."
Is peri-oral dermatitis similar to acne and do you think the toothpaste you recommend can help? My "acne" often concentrates around the perimeters of my lips... of course I hate that!!

Hi, kmd.
As usual, you ask good questions.
Acne and perioral dermatitis ARE similar in appearance and actually have some characteristics in common. As with ALL chronic conditions, there are likely MANY contributing factors to both and some of the things that help one will also help the other.
With the perioral dermatitis, common contributing factors are toothpaste, lipstick, mouth wash and the touching habit. That does not mean that the same stuff that helps acne might not be beneficial here as well.
Hope this helps.
Walt
