Perioral dermatitis

Posted by Eva on March 22, 2001 at 15:57:52:

I've read your very helpful posts on perioral dermatitis and have two questions. 1) I recently stopped using products with sodium laurel sulfate. My rash nearly disappeared over 48 hours, then came back far worse than ever. Is this a rebound effect, or does it indicate that SLS is not my problem? It's been 2 weeks. 2) I know I have become sensitized to cortisone through my original use of topical steroid creams. I now get small sores on my nose if I even use Becconase or Flonase nasal sprays (steroidal). Could my use of Pulmicort steroid inhaler for asthma also be a problem? I'm considering trying a switch to Intal inhaler, which is not a steroid, but my asthma's pretty severe so I'd like some idea if it's likely to help before I try. Thanks for your great work and any help you can offer!

Since you mention having both dermatitis and asthma, there is a possibility that your problem could be coming from systemic yeast/fungus. Read the recent posts by S.H.A.P.E. and myself. Doug Kaufmann, a nutritionist with a daily national TV program (Noon EST on Family Net) has a book, "The Fungus Link" that is loaded with information, and those are 2 of the things he says can be caused by fungus. There are some excellent natural products that can help along with a diet that eliminates sugar/yeast, etc. If you have any questions you may e-mail me at lifeline@perry.gulfnet.com I don't have a web page.

Thank you for the feedback, Jan. I have heard about the yeast/fungus issue and one dermatologist had me try the strong antifungal Diflucan pill for several weeks, which had no impact (and was a pretty toxic drug, also). As I've had Diflucan work very well in one-dose form for occasional vaginal yeast infections, I'd think the longer dose would have helped some if that was the problem. But I'll keep it in mind if nothing else works. Thanks!

Hi, Eva.

Certainly the LSL cannot be your only cause. Since LGS is usually related to this condition you might educate yourself about that.

You might start with the archives about allergy and clinical ecology. It could even be related to the plastic mouthpiece of your inhaler.....

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
