I have suffered from very dry, cracked, painful lips (chelitis?) for as long as I can remember. Had this AND perleche (painful cracks at the corners of my mouth) as a kid, but was never told about the B6 connection to this problem. As an adult, could NOT find anything to help the pain and general embarrassment of peeling, cracked, dry, and often bloody lips. Tried lots of different lip balms and such, but they all made it worse (yes, addiction--it's a terrible thing). Even concentrated behavioral modification (i.e., not licking or biting my lips) didn't have much effect.
About a month ago or so, I was shopping for a multivitamin and ran across a bottle labeled "L-Lysine--for clear, healthy lips and mouth tissue". I thought, that's what I need! What did I have to lose, except a few bucks? I bought some and within a week or so, my chapped lips were a thing of the past--no kidding. I have suffered with this problem for many many years, and this is the only thing that has made a difference. I still use lip balm, but only about 1/3 or 1/4 as often (e.g., 2 or 3 times per 24 hours), and I don't have any more bloody irritated areas on my lips. (and yes, I would love to wean myself from balm altogether--I'm working on it! It's a POSSIBLE dream now!)
Don't know much about this supplement (there's no RDA, apparently), but it really made a huge difference to me. If you have the same problem, you might try this and see what happens. I wish I'd heard about it years ago! The brand I take comes in 1000 mg tabs, so I take 1000 mg once a day (after breakfast with the rest of my vitamins), for those of you wanting to try it. (I have permanent white scars on my lips from this problem--that's how bad it was and how much better I'm doing!)
Has anyone else tried this? Does anyone know how it works? Hopefully, this post might bring a little relief to someone else out there. My best wishes to anyone else suffering from this problem.
Namaste', y'all!

I can attest that L-lysine works for mouth ulcers faster than anything else i have tried. I had a mouth full a few years back while vacationing in the Pocono Mts. in PA at a WAWA the girl behind the counter recommended I try L-lysine I figured it can't hurt 2 days later they were gone. I hope this is relevant.

Hi, kmd!
I hope this works for you. It has made such a tremendous difference to me. Even in the few days since my post, I'm cutting down more and more on the lip balm. Please let us all know if this works for you, too, since I'm not sure it isn't entirely a psychosomatic effect in my case! (Just from wanting it to work!) Such a simple thing to try, eh? Best wishes!

Funny, I was just talking to someone else I know who gets mouth ulcers ("canker sores", we call them). He said it seems logical that the L-Lysine would help (and I agree), but unfortunately, at the time we were talking, I had a dilly of a canker sore! So I can't really testify as to how much it helps that particular problem. Strangely enough, this was the first canker sore I'd had in a long time, so maybe the L-Lysine is keeping most of them at bay, eh? Good thing to know that it helped you, though--maybe it will help others.
P.S. Went back to buy a second bottle, and now the bottle (very same brand, dose size, etc.) has a label that says something about collagen repair! No "mouth health" mention at all! I'm glad I found it when I did, because I never would have tried it otherwise.

Thanks, Max!
I would be very interested in hearing of anyone else's experience with this (good or bad). This is a new one on me.
Namaste`

I have tiny white bumps on my lips. It appears to be the size of the tip of a needle. It appears as if someone was to poke multiple little white dots on my inner lips. These bumps dont scrape off nor are they itchy/painfull. The rash has not spread, nor am i sure of the initial date of occurance. I know that it has been there for at least six months and it has not spread. I tried to pop them but they dont pop. Do I have some sort of disease? Who do I need to go see? Have you ever heard of this? I do not have oral sex, am have been married for over 12 years. We do not kiss much. I am just wondering why these bumps are on my lips or does everyone have them? I want to have smooth lips. Can you help?

Hi, Lana.
These bumps are partially blocked tiny salivary glands with which the entire mouth is lined. It is the beginning of LGS.
The most likely "smoking gun" is something in your diet to which you are developing a hypersensitivity BECAUSE OF THE LGS.
It is not a disease and it is not catching.
Hope this helps.
