Perioral Dermatitis

Hello. I am 28 years old female who has recently
moved to New York from Japan. I first had this symtom
about 5 years ago. It was just a spot on the lower right
corner of my lips. Since the area was dry, I applied my
father's methol ointment which worsen the condition
and the area started weep & flake. I kept putting all kind
of things to the affected area. I don't remember how but
the symptom dissapeared for 6 months. Then I had it
again - this time more than one areas. In my attemt to
"hide" the redness I covered the areas with foundation
- which I shouldn't have - that of course made it worse.
So I stopped putting everything and the condition
dissapeared. I do have the tendency to "overtreat" it. I go
out and buy all kinds of products like nuts.

I read a lot of books about skin & health. I adopted
Aromatheapy to my life. I stopped using store-sold skin
care products and started to follow what Aromatherapy
book says: massage face with oil with essential oils in.
I eliminated stressful factors from my life, on top of stop
eating sweet bread/dessert that I love. Then the
symptom was gone for 2 years after having it for a year.

Since I moved to the Big Apple two years ago from
Japan, I went throght a series of difficult times and I
was under tremendrous amount of stress from lack of
sleep, diet change (from eating rice to
bread/flour-based food), anxiety about my future,
marriage, etc. The desease came back. It happens
around my cycle.

By the way, I found the toothpaste with tartar control too
powerful for me - it burns my month.

My question is: could my problem be caused by
stress/dipression & diet? My husbad yells at me if I say
that since I am not the only person with stress. But I am
from Japan where things are a lot more peaceful. I can
not get my husband's support on this. He gets
annoyed by my screwed up face. My job hunt is
unsucessful due to this desease and I need a health
benefit so I can afford medical treatment.. If I don't get a
job soon, I will lose my husband. I am so at my wits
end.

Miho, sorry for all your problems. If your diagnosis is correct, there is much information on perioral dermatitis if you put it the search box above. I think some have felt that sodium laurel sulfite (SLS) often added to toothpaste, etc. aggravates the problem.

Sorry to hear about the extra stress at home, stay strong though in yourself, and know everything is being attracted to you, faith honey moving out of the fear; The faster we drop our problems in our mind and move into solutions in every area the less stress we have;

Now for the Deratitis; Here is all i know on it; Many cases are caused by an allergy to perfumes, cosmetics,creams, soaps or metals; Some are sensitive by sun light;Stress especially chronic tension, can cause or at least exacerbate dermatitis. I since you might have a glutton intolerance; Try a glutten free diet for 6 weeks, then add gluten foods back one at a time, and see if the condition changes. Keep the colon clean also is important. Use a fiber suppliment such as flax seed or psyllium and drink a lot of distilled water; Use cleansing enimas for removing toxins for quicker healing;
Watch your food plan; Avoid; dairy products,sugar,white flour, fats,fried foods and processed foods;

Thanks for the advice. Does gultten-free diet mean: no
bread, pasta/noodles? Could I eat rice? How about rice
pasta?

It's true that my dairy intake has increased dramatically
since I moved to NY. And suger! It seems that a lot of
food here has much more suger in it .

I will follow your advice and watch my diet carefully. I
just bought a good colon cleanse suppliment at a local
health food store. I will incorporate this into my
wellness program. Thanks so much! I really didn't
expect that my email to your website gets read nor
someone actually respond.

Hi Miho, Sounds like your ready to work from the inside out now with solutions; Glutton is wheat,[white and whole, wheat] Semolina, spelt, There is some in Rye,oats also; The best grains to eat are rice, teff, amaranth, quionia, and millet; Rice pasta should not have glutton unless they have added white flour to it; Rice noodles should be o.k.; Think back now and see when you were better, perhaps like you said in Japan and look at all the food changes; In Japan you do not eat as much glutton in foods either; Great off sugar also sounds like a good plan, eat small amounts of fruit, wonderful mangos-ha! that is what is in season here; Do not forget to breath deeply and do some kind of arobic type exercise to keep cleaning your lympth also; There is a power behind you assisting you remember;

Thanks Terri-Lynn. Someone from this website told me
that I should get a thing called L-Lysine to help reduce
my rashes. Another person told me to avoid productds
with SLS(right?). I stopped using the facial cleanser
with SLS - which I have been using. I have not eating
any glutton nor sugar for the past 2 days and my face is
already looking much better. The rashes which were
noticably pink are now fading. I think by putting so much
products on the affected areas in attempt to cure -
actually did more harm than good - it must have caused
these areas to have a multi-chemical sensitivity. Now
that I am doing NOTHING my skin is actually healing -
amazing.

My mother in Japan has sent me a set of SLS-FREE
skin care products (cleanser, lotion & moisturizer) that
she has been using. Actually, the negative effects that
SLS has are well known fact in Japan (according to her)
that there is a company (at least) that is dedicated to
make skin care products specially to help people with
skin problems like mine. My mother's skin is always
amazing so the products hopefully do the same for me.
(In conjunction to my diet re-modification - going back to
eating like a Japanese person!)

Thanks for your assistance. It really empowered me.

Great, i get goose bumps, aren't People Wonderful!

I'm just so glad that you listen and try things! Working with the cause is always good, inside out and then also looking at out side in-ha! You might look into a natural parasite control, i suspect [intuitively] you picked up one when things got sluggish; There is a product called Artemesia Annua which is chinese worm wood plant, this would work very effect and it is an antio oxidant also which is benificial.
It will do the job!

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with perioral dermatitis. I'm on some antibiotics right now. I have noticed some change but i'm still very dry and flaky on my face. I had found that Moisturel seemed to keep my face hydrated pretty good but, I read in some article that petrolatum which is found in this cream(moisturel) can be a cause to perioral dermatitis. Does anyone out there have a solution to what face cream I can use to help the dryness?? Please help. I've been trying everything.

Not many will see your question since you posted it at the end of a long thread. Why don't you put per. derm. into the search box above and I'm sure you will read many recommendations and perhaps some from Dr. Stoll.

Hi, Belle.

ANYONE who prescribes antibiotics for perioral dermatitis is not someone I would ever go to for anything.

What have you learned from the perioral archives?

Hi there -- it's been exactly 3 weeks since I last posted
a message on this site about my perioral problems.

Since then, I have been eating like a Japanese person
(which I am) with a few more restrictions : no wheat, a
very little suger (it's hard to cut completely out!) no dairy,
no alcohol, no coffee. I have also ordered relaxation
tapes. I have always exersised 3-4 times a week at a
gym so that is no a change. I have read more about
Candia overgrowth on this site and have tried
fungal-killing & removing approaches as well.

I will tell you -- all that has made a big differense. The
rashes became almost invisible within the first 4 days
or so. And they remained the same way for another 2
weeks.

I just discoverd an unti-fungal salve (by a company
called Quantum) at a local health food shop. This
company also makes excellent liquid herbal remedies
to be taken orally. The salve is made for treating skin
affeced by Candia fungi. I just put it on -- and it was like
a miracle. The very pale rashes that were still *kind of*
there COMPLETELY DISSAPEARED as I was putting it
on. The very mild tingling sensation that I have had all
along also went away instantly. Hooray!

As the doctor Walt says, I know I am supposed to
continue this topical treatment for another week to
make sure the fungi is gone. I am also supposed to
continue working on my "inner" health for several
months to get permanent results. As far as the amount
of candida inside my body goes, I don't think that my
case is so terrible as I have only lived in America for 2
years -- that many years of damage is the worst I can
get.

Well, I have learned an important lesson. I know now
that living in a country with abundance of freedom in
indivisual choices means that one is responsible to
actually make choices -- intelligent, educated choices.
You are not protected by the government or any kind of
authority when it comes to indivisual health issues!

Thank you so much for providing such wonderful
services -- good people like you all make this country a
better place to be. Bless you.
