Hi,
I was just diagnosed with POD yesterday. I've had this for about 3 weeks now and was just treating it with Hydrocortisone Cream because it slightly itched. Then I applied a Eucerin cream over that. Now since reading on your site you mentioned something about toothpaste causes. This rung a bell since I don't use steroid creams so this is not the reason this started. Now what I think happened was in the modeling industry there is treatment many models use for breakouts. I've had an occasional "breakout" and thought I'd try it. You put a dab of regular toothpaste on the spot and wear it overnight. In the morning you wash it off. Well, this was VERY harsh on my skin and actually left a bigger red mark (however the actual breakout was flat and not swollen anymore). This led to flaking and peeling. So I'm wondering if the toothpaste is the culprit to begin with? I was given Erythromicin orally (1 pill twice a day) with 2 refills. Do you think the toothpaste is the problem. I'm horrified by this and totally freaked hearing about these people who once off the meds it comes back, sometimes worse!
Thanks for your help!

Hyrdocortisone is a "steriod" cream... it's just the losest dose you can get. I'd try to get away from it, it won't help in the long. Yes, putting toothpaste on your face over night will cause a POD eruption. Now that the bacteria is in your face you will need to kill it with the oral anti-biotics. If the Eryho does not work tell your doc you want something from the tetracycline family.

Hi, Kimberly.
The problem now is that once the skin is inflamed it may start reacting to everything placed on it--even makeup.
If this were me I would immediately change to toothpaste without the stuff that causes a lot of stuff like this . See squigle@zdnetmail.com
I would only use seriously hypoallergenic makeup and hopoallergenic cleansing cream and soaps for your face.
Let us know if you have caught this in time and perhaps we will have more information for you.

Thanks so much for responding! Definitely NOT going to do the toothpaste to kill a pimple ever again...LOL! HATING that the only option is the oral antibiotic. How long would you say I give it before I see an improvement? Thanks again!

Kim POD fades very very slowly, so don't expect an overnight clearing. As long as you see it getting better keep taking the antibiotics. Don't put cortisone creams on your face... they will make it worse. If you do not see any improvement in 2-3 weeks, ask your doc for Minocycline. It is the strongest tetracycline & will kill the bacteria very quickly.
