My husband was clearing some brush from a fence and got poison ivy on his arms. He'd never had it before. (BTW, there was no jewelweed anywhere in the area -- I know that plant well.)
Anyway, we bought & used the jewelweed herbal spray, rhus tox and all kinds of caladryl variations. But the outbreak was getting worse, with no sign of clearing up after a week. Our locally-owned drugstore sells a product called Zanfel, which is a special soap that binds with the reaction-producing substance that remains on the skin after contact w/the plant. Zanfel is expensive (about $35), and I sure thought twice about buying it, but the pharmacist said people report back to him that it works -- and by golly, it does, and FAST! It truly is worth the extra money to have this on hand. (We had already spent $$$ on the other preparations, plus bandaging supplies (the skin was oozing, crusty, really a mess.) Used the Zanfel yesterday, and today it is visibly healing -- the itching stopped almost immediately. Just remarkable!
If you use it as soon as you realize you've tangled with poison ivy, it'll wash away the irritant, and you'll have no problem. By the way, I have no connection whatsoever with the company, but thought this might help someone out there. There's a lot of poison-ivy stuff on the pharmacy/health-food store shelves that just does nothing but lighten your wallet. Happy summer, everyone!

Hi Jenny,
As you have said, the secret is in getting the irritant washed of the skin as soon as possible.
Here is a link with a few ideas..

Thanks, Jenny.
Anything that saponifies the irritant oil of poison ivy that causes the rash, as soon as it is exposed, will help a lot. Every minute the oil remains on the skin the more rash there will be.
