posion Ivy

I have posion ivy and was wondering 2 things. 1. Does it go through your blood stream and just show up, so as it could be inside and possibly in my throat? and 2. I had gotten this early in the season and got the steroid shots and pills. I have since found out that I was and am pregnant, will these harm my unborn child. If so what things may happen? Please if you could send this to my email it would be greatly appreciated.

There was a flurry of poisen ivy posting in 1998, but the subject then seems to have stopped. As a poisen ivy attractor who needs at times to work around the plants, I read up on it as a teenager years ago and found the irritants are mostly several acids carried in an oil base. Thus cures that remove the oil work, for example soap, alcohol, or detergent. Also cures that neutralize the acid work such as baking soda, bleach. Best for me is to wash within an hour (personal variable - some must be faster, some can be slower) with dish detergent to cut the oil. (But have used gasoline when no water was available.) Then bleach or soda. If my skin is generally desensitized due to hours of scuba diving or exposure to sun and wind, then susceptibility seems reduced.

Dr Stoll's comments to the questioners back in 1998 were clear, accurate and, I think, consistent with the above.

I want to re-open the poisen ivy subject in order to explore the possibility of desensitizing people (me first, then my family) to the plant. I have heard stories of mothers feeding leaves to their infants but couldn't trace them. I'm not an experienced web searcher, but the only references to "immunity" to Poisen Ivy that I found were on this bulletin board. 'Kevin' in 1998 said he eats three leaves daily. "dp" in 1998 described a regimen prescribed by a doctor. 'Doug Jakubik' described three shots in Aug 2000. Does anybody have definitive details or references of treatments? Does anybody know if I might put myself into anaphylactic (sp?) shock if I very very slowly start to eat leaves and increase the level? Does it matter if I encapsulate the leaf fragments so that the toxins only contact the digestive lining rather than the skin or mucus membranes of the mouth and throat?

If I can find time, I plan to read up on this at a medical school library. If I learn anything, I'll post the references and results.

Thank you to the Stoll family for this website. I just stumbled into it and it is very helpful. Dr S, your patience with repetitive PI questions and clear discussion of the various subjects is great. Bill S you have done a great job with the website!

Thanks, LT.

Rhus Tox is what you are talking about. Also, at first contact, jewel weed rubbed on the area is VERY effective. EVERYWHERE POISON IVY GROWS THERE IS JEWEL WEED NEARBY!
