I am 10 weeks pregnant and was just diagnosed with a very large ovarian cyst. My doctor believed I could possibly have a multiple pregnancy as my uterus measures above my naval and there were two masses felt in abdominal examination. The ultra sound showed thatthere was ony one baby and also a large cyst that has approximately 500 cc's of fluid in it. I will see a high-risk specialist next week but I am looking for information so I am somewhat educated before my appointment. What are risks with this and treatment for myself and the baby and also what options for treatment will he recommend? How did I get this cyst with pregnancy as usually lack of ovulation prevents cysts?

Hi, Amanda -
Cysts can develop during pregnancy. The specialist will try to wait until after the twelfth week to remove it unless it is causing you problems, and it didn't sound as if it was.
I have known one person who had a cyst and it was removed successfully without complications. Good luck!! Raisa

Hi, Amanda.
The simplest approach is commonly the best, especially if it can cause no harm. Any competent OB/GYN (really any doc) can use a needle to draw out the 500 cc of fluid. If it recurrs (likely) it can be done again. I fail to see what is the big deal.
There is no risk to the pregnancy with this technique. Why has someone not already suggested this and done it???

Amanda,
I too had a cyst during my pregnancy nine years ago, and my doc had me all freaked out about it, but I went to see another doctor and he said to leave it alone, it went away after my pregnancy, I guess. when they did an ultrasound after my son was born, it was gone. I suppose this is normal. it never caused any problems and I never worried about it. Get a second opinion on the cyst. Dr. Stoll said that they could drain it, this would sound normal to me. It wouldn't be any more risky than an amnio would it??? All of these posts are interesting, I have gone through so many of these things. I feel old and am only thirty years old. Hahaha.. Good luck to you. Try not to worry, you will be fine. You said you are ten weeks along, have you heard the heartbeat yet???
