A scientific discussion?

Posted by Julia on June 20, 2002 at 20:06:07:

In relation to my previous message< i would like to add that I wrote this email to Dr Stoll a while ago - I don't know if it has been recieved. I am posting it here, as I would be interested in other people's views on this too, as I ma sure it's a fairly new discussion/cure worth having:

Dear Dr. Stoll,

I am writing this via email as I would like to give
you more detail and a better idea of why I posted the
original question on your BB. The question was
regarding the use of B5 during pregnancy - your reply
was that you agreed with the poster who wrote that
thay did not recommend such high doses as 5g daily.

Let me give you some background as I would be very
interested in your scientific opinion on this.

I am a 30 year old woman who is hoping to get pregnant
in the near future. Up until about 3 years ago, I had
never had a pimple in my life. At the age of 27,
however, my skin started to deteriorate. It started
gradually and became worse and worse. It was never
awful but I preferred to have my former good skin and
I am not the type of person who just lets things go, I
like to learn and do something about problems. A
search on google lead me to your website and since
then I have been hooked!

I started to learn more and more and have invited many
friends to come and visit and learn from the board.

I started taking B5 about two years ago. To start with
it caused worse skin but within about 6 months or so
it started to work really well. It brought several
benefits:

1) It cleared my skin

2) It made my skin picture perfect - tiny, tiny pores
and very, very smooth.

3) It made me very regular which I had never been
before, which in intself is crucial to good health, as
your site teaches.

4) I felt I had more energy.

5) Instead of drying my skin out, it actually made it
more smooth.

6) Any wounds/cuts on the skin heal SO fast and SO
well - it is amazing to witness.

Naturally and without a doubt, I am more than prepared
to have however an awful skin, so that my baby can be
safe and healthy. I am not asking the question for the
sake of perfect skin, but more from a scientific point
of view. What I am wondering is this:

If all the above fantastic benefits are seen from my
5g daily intake, then surely there must be good
reason? It seems that my body is screaming out for
Pantothenic acid to the point where I am worried that
I am lacking in it which then may be very bad for my
child. You always say to listen to our bodies and that
is what I am trying to do.

I understand that large doses of B5 can cause
deficiency of the other B's whish also are crutial to
a child's development - but then I must ask again -
why is my body reacting so well to it? Also, the
multivitamin from Metagenics contains a good level of
all the B vitamins so perharps there will not be too
much competition? Unless the absorption of the large
amounts of B5 stops the absorption of the others?

To give you a further picture:

1) I am eating well, three meals per day with no
snacking etc in between.

2) I have DRASTICALLY cut back on sugars and refined
foods in the last two years.

3) I very, very RARELY drink alcohol.

4) I totally STOPPED all soft drinks about two years
ago, my main drinking being filtered water
(ocassionally orange juice when eating out).

5) I am taking 6 pills of the Metagenics multigenics
formula per day (going for over a year now).

6) I am taking 5 capsules of the Metagenics EPA-DHA
complex per day (going four months now - I understand
that you highly recommend this during pregnany).

7) Up until a week ago, I was taking 5 g of B5. Since
lowering to 2 g, I have noticed a couple of small
bumps in my skin, my skin is no longer as even and
smooth, I am not as regular as normal, I am feeling
some fatigue and seem to need more sleep. I also seem
to be feeling less optimistc than normal... not as
patient with the "downside of life".

Now this to me inicates that B5 was doing my body a
lot of good. I now fear that this may mean that I am
lacking in B5 and I fear for my baby. At first I
thought that it was the multivitamin intake that was
beginning to take good action, but as mentioned since
lowering the B5 dose, certain signs are clear that it
is needed.

Should I really stop taking it?

I would love to hear your more detailed, scientific
thoughts on this, as I am sure that you must be
interested in this fairly new "skin treatment" - which
by the way, as mentioned above has many other
EXCELLENT effects.

I have read that high levels of stress can cause
vitamin B deficiency and I have during the last five
years been under a tremendous amount of stress.

I know this has turned out to be a very long message
and I would be happy to pay for your time.

Looking forward to your reply,

Julia

p.s When I first started coming to your site, I bought
meditation tapes and loved listening to them twice a
day. However, I have to admit, I have been neglecting
that in the last year but now plan to definitely
introduce it properly - I know it is the best thing
for both my health and any future children.

Hi, Julia (and Erin M).

See my previous note today about this.

It is pretty apparent that YOU need this dose but your yet to be conceived baby may not.

You are already doing many healthy things and I hope you continue to do so. A good blueprint for a woman and her pregnancy is "Every Woman's Book" by Dr Paavo Airola: Available through the amazon.com link on this site OR through your lending library.

Many of his recommendations match what we have been discussing as wellness on this BB but extends it to the father as well.

In MY estimation, not enough research has been done, with large doses of B5 and pregnancy, to know. I believe the odds favor safety but more strongly believe that the safest policy is a holistic aproach.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Thank you Dr. Stoll,

You say that it is clear that I need it but that the foetus may not.

My questions are then,

1) Is it not the case that B5 is only taken in the amounts needed and no more? Would the foetus not react in the same way? Taking only what it needs and throwing the rest out? Or do you thiunk there may be a possibility that the foetus may "overload"?

2) When you say that it is clear that I need it... that in itself is what worries me for the unbron child (not necessarily my skin). I am worried about being so lacking in this vitamin. As all mothers, I want to do the best by my child right from the start - and surely part of that is to make sure that I myself am healthy and, whereever possible, non-deficient?

I agree about the holistic approach and I am definitely, with the help of this board, working on it. It is the "in the mean time" that I am trying to address.

Thanks, Julia.

Immature metabolisms handle substances MUCH differently than adult ones do. There is NO research I know of that has studied how an immature metabolism would handle the levels of B5 needed to deal with your acne, for example.

Without that kind of research there is no way that I can recommend more B5 than there is in a balanced B 100 formula taken twice a day.

Sorry that science is so backward in this area.

Walt

Thank you for taking time on this, Dr Stoll.

One LAST question on this (perhaps a silly one but I'd like to learn):

I have experimented and noticed that the amount my body seems to be happy with is around 5g/day. Since my body seems to need this, will not most (if not all) of it be taken up by me and never even get to the foetus?

Hi, Julie.

I believe that to be so BUT the research proving it to be so has not been done. Remember, you asked for a scientific discussion :>).
