Dear Dr. Stoll,
I have scoured the magnesium archives and asked questions related to high blood pressure, but I am still in a quandry. I am 21 weeks pregnant. My baseline blood pressure is 130's-140's sysolic and 80's diastolic. I have just started taking the dose of magnesium you recommended (1000 mg twice a day). I was confused about elemental vs. bound (with glycinate) magnesium, but that is clear now. Anyway, my midwife was concerned about my blood pressures being too high and referred me to the doctor in the group. He suggested starting me on some aldomet. I in turn suggested eating right, exercising, and seeing where we go with that first. I will also take the magnesium. Do you think it would be safer for the baby for me to go on the aldomet? And is magnesium going to hurt my baby? I'm really confused about what to do. The doctor is very concerned and very serious which makes me nervous. What should I do?

Hi, Julie.
Magnesium is not going to hurt the baby but aldomet might.
Go to the reference librarian and have him show you the listing in the PDR. Read all of the precautions, contraindications, side effects and see what THAT says. If it says anything bad about pregnancy, make copies and take them to your doc.
In the meantime it would be a good idea for you to get a simple BP checking device and start recording your BP upon arising and midafternoon. Take this record in to the doc every time you see him.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.
Walt

Dear Dr. Stoll,
In just the past week of using the suggested dose of magnesium, my blood pressure has come down to the 120's over 70's. I am continuing to eat properly most of the time, and have been regularly getting full body massage, and practicing SR. I am now trying a little bit of yoga, too and really find that it is so refreshing. Thank you so much for your information. I am feeling so much better and now truly believe that I WILL beat this high blood pressure and have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Thank you , thank you, thank you.
Julie

Thanks, Julie.
Now, I wonder why your doc did not know this?
Kep up the good work!
