Yes I know...smoking is stupid and anyone who wants to have a baby should practice wellness for at least a year.
BUT for those who do get pregnany while smoking I can't figure it out...is there some sort of study that proves smoking inhibits conception or is it just a run of luck that it happens? Out of all of my girlfriends only one didn't smoke but the rest did and had no problems getting pregnant but I have to wonder....

it COULD inhibit conception, since it uses up some vitamins that your body needs. Smolers might chose mates with unhealthy habits which could lower their sperm count.
Smoking definitely can contribute to premature birth. A baby who spends a month in the hospital instead of going right home with you can cost you $20 to $30 thousand dollars just for THAT hospital bills, not to mention the possibility of future medical bills for the baby. Is it worth it?

My thought is if you are very fertile you will get pregnant whether you smoke or not. Of course if a woman has a problem getting pregnant and she does smoke someone will blame it on the smoking. They also say that drinking can affect fertility but think about all the people who had a wild night out on the town and conception happened :)

I assume you would stop smoking if you got pregnant so why not stop now? The heaqlthier your body, the healthier the baby. If you wait, you might have a hard rtime quiting when you are pregnant and put your baby in great jepardy.

Hi Rachel,
If you can, try to get a copy of the show, Miracle of Life. (i
believe that is what it is called). l I saw it probably 15
years ago on PBS, and it has played many times
throughout the years. I suppose you can call your local
PBS station to ask if it is available. When I watched, I
was in tears. It is the most beautiful thing to see life
developing day by day. It was sucking on its' thumb by
10 weeks, I believe it was. You see that and you won't
even bother having these questions. You too were
once this developing little being, and you still deserve
the very best for your body now.

it wasn't about smoking "while pregnant" it was smoking while "trying" to conceive...hope this clarifies!
Thanks!

it wasn't a question of smoking while pregnant but smoking while "trying" to get pregnant. Most of you got the post but just to clarify, smoking while pregnant is not an option but seeing so many of my friends who conceived 1st or 2nd try who did smoke "before getting pregnant" but reading that smoking can cause infertility got me thinking is all.

Hi, Rachel.
What amazes me is that smoking could be SO important that one would take such a risk with a fetus.

I'm not asking if its ok to smoke while pregnant - I was asking if smoking while "trying" to conceive will inhibit conception...the ONLY reason I was asking is out of curiosity since I've recently read "taking charge of your fertility" and it said that smoking can decrease your fertility BUT all of my girlfriends who have babies did smoke while "trying" to conceive but of course stopped once they found out. Just sounds contradictory to me is all. Does this make more sense now???

Rachel,
The best thing that can happen is for the fertility to be affected. The worst is permanent damage to the fetus and that is life long!
Surely you can understand that ANYTHING that might affect fertility could also affect the health of the pregnancy and the fetus. The most damaging time is in early pregnancy before you know you are pregnant!

I guess it depends on how fertile and health a person is to begin with. And whether or not the man smokes too. Fertility is a factor on both sides of the equation. You realize that a sampling of your friends doesn't make or break a theory, so to find out, I'd research it further. I am sure you can look on google for studies if you are that interested. And then remember that studies can be biased too!

Rachel,
Both of my responses addressed your specific question. You must not want to hear it.
