confused over oils

Posted by Denise [252.1351] on February 10, 2005 at 17:01:50:

I read about the oils. I buy primrose at wal-mart-its not that expensive. But my chiro told me not to take to much of it. so am i suppose to or not? I also got fish oil from wal-mart. so how do I know what my limits are. how do i know i am taking enough or not enough? what will it do?

a good book on oils is Fats that Kill, Fats that Heal. I think the author is Erasmus Udo.
It would be good to ask your chiro what his specific concerns about primrose oil are.I seem to recall it isn't good for pregnant women, but don't know why else it would be a problem.
The main thing is your body needs a balance between omega 3 and omega 6 oils, and most people eat so much of the veggie oils that are rich in omega 6 that they are very off balance. Fish and fish oil provides omega 3's and you are unlikely to get too much.

I hope Walt addresses this, but I did find this article about epo during pregnancy.

Another great book is "Inflammation Nation" by Floyd Chilton. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0743269640/qid=1108146982/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/103-3815179-8206217

I learned a lot about the ratio of oils, etc. Plus, his work is backed by lab research, and is quite interesting.

Blissy,

Nearly 100% of drugs have a pregnancy warning since none of them can be known to be totally safe until they have been used for about 100 years. Since no drug company will ever do this kind of long-term research they all put this disclaimer in the description of the drug's effects and warnings to CYA and for no other reason.

Omega 6s are one of the essential fatty acids, requires for health, and so cannot be a problem with pregnancy unless they are too LOW. It is not even considered a drug. They are just CYA again. Believe, me, if MY wife were pregnant I would sneak it into her food if I could not convince her to take a reasonable dose of it.

Knoledge will set you free.

Walt

O.K. here is my plan Walt.

I occasionally take flaxseed oil in my smoothie, but i stopped taking EPO after reading the uncertainty about it during preg.

This what I plan to do. Take 4 tablespoons of flaxseed oil a couple of times a week, and 1 1000mg EPO a couple of times a week. What do you think? Is that enough during pregnancy, or too much EFA's????

Thanks for your advice.

I have noticed since stopping the EPO and the regular flaxseed oil, that I have dry skin, and dry hair. I guess those are signs of low EFA's.

Thanks, Blissy.

Better than nothing for the fetus but hardly enough for most people to help their skin.

What dosage of flaxseed oil would u recommend for the foetus right now and how often? Everyday?

I am more interested in that right now, rather than dry hair or skin.

I probably won't take the EPO , and will just rely on flaxseed oil everyday.

Thanks

Hi, Blissy.

This has not yet been studied long enough to know the optimal dosage. All that is known, for sure, is that we do not get enough to prevent some of the neurological deficits children are born with. No one has ever noted any damage from taking any reasonable dose. Surely, taking at least half the therapeutic trial dosages on the home page would be safe and likely effective.

Hi Blissy,

Dry skin and hair in the winter is fairly common, due to low humidity. Too frequent washing with soaps and shampoos, alcohol based rinses and bacterial hand cleaner further deplete the natural body oils that are needed to keep skin and hair
from drying out.

If you must wash your hands very often... (more than 5 times a day) be sure to follow with an absorbable cream such as Nivea (which smells better than the other one).
Most times, you can get by just rinsing the hands and avoid
the oil removing soaps.

If you have dry lips, stop licking them to try to moisten them... it only worsens the problem. Lipstick or balm is
far superior.

Ron
