Group B Strep in Pregnancy, LGS, and Antibiotics

Hi Dr. Stoll
I have researched all the archives to find info, but could not find what I was looking for. I am currently seven months pregnant with my fourth child. My second child was stillborn 3 1/2 years ago at 40 weeks with the very probable (they said 99%) cause being Group B Strep because of a culture they took of her throat immediately after her birth. My membranes had not ruptured, no sign of infection in me, yet the bacteria got to her. When I got pregnant with my third child, the perinatologist recommended taking penicillin from 30 weeks on, to protect the baby from Group B-- (I apparently have a high count). I followed his advice during that pregnancy, and ended up with a baby that had thrush before we even left the hospital. We battled that for almost a year, along with lots of ear infections, etc, I believe all from the effects of prolonged antibiotic use. So here I am again, pregnant with #4, they are wanting me to use the antibiotics again, and now I have no choice but to have another c-section (in our city insurance companies require it if you have already had one). I have never been a really sick person, but I have always suffered from acne, allergies, and sometimes asthma, or tightness in my chest when I am allergic to something. About four years ago, I went on a candida diet, and noticed HUGE improvement in overall health, but the diet was SO hard to follow long term. I am wondering about taking primal defense with the antibiotics, but wouldn't they just counteract each other? I really do not know what to do! I am unhealthy, my diet is not the greatest, and I really feel trapped by all the medical advice! ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so long...

Hi, S.

I do not know that anything can be done about this at this late date--other than the conventional recommendations and risks.

The solutions that I know are: Start the lifestyle recommended in Dr Airola's classic (both you and the father): "Every Woman's Book" at least 2 years prior to conception.

Any healthy thing you do right now can only help but may not be enough to prevent what is to come. Is following the anticandida and LGS protocol really more difficult than what you are facing right now?

Sorry I cannot help more. This is a case of "fixing the roof when the sun is shining".

Walt
