Dear Dr. Stoll and everyone interested in giving me advice,
I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and I’m concerned about loosing any desire to eat meat. Normally, I’m not a big meat eater but right now this is the last food I would like to eat. Everywhere I read that eating meat during pregnancy is very important so I was wondering should I listen to my body or should I force myself into eating meat.
Right now I follow my heart and I eat grains, diary products, fruits and vegetables. Before being pregnant I was avoiding diary products, but right now I can not imagine not eating them.
Thank you.

Mia,
There have been plenty of healthy babies born from mothers who don't eat meat..Think about juicing vegtables and most of thr green food supplements are safe for expecting mom's..

Hopefully this will pass for you soon and you'll feel like eating meat & fish. Meanwhile, your protein intake is of the utmost importance to your baby's development. Try to go for whole milk dairy products and if you can handle eating eggs, eat plenty of them. When I make scrambled eggs for my daughter I add cheese and nutritional yeast and they're yummy and extra-nutitious. Eat your beans and rice too to get complete proteins. As long as you get around 80+ grams of protein each day you'll be fine not eating meat - it will just take a little extra effort.

It's just one of those things. Your body chemicals are just in a flurry.
I too was and am a meat eater. During BOTH pregnancies I could eat nothing but tuna in terms of a "meat". Not a steak, fish, chicken - nada - crossed my lips. couldn't even smell the stuff or I'd get sick to my stomach.
*both kids are great, healthy and I was fine also :)

I'm a vegan, so all my pregnancies were without meat, eggs, or milk. Just eat beans, peanuts, and raw tree nuts.
Meat is most digestible well-boiled, so, you might want to try some very boiled chicken or turn it into chicken fricasee (in white gravy) which is often soothing to the stomach. But, don't worry if you don't eat meat- your body knows best.

Hi, Mia.
You will note that vegetarians have less problems with pregnancy than nearly anyone and their fetuses are extremely healthy. Learn something about this and stop worrying. Your bodymind is trying to tell you something.
Be sure to include some legumes when you eat grains.
See Lippe's most recent handbook about vegetarianism. Her first book was "Diet for a Small Planet" but she has simplified her instructions to match current research.
Let us know what you learn.

Hi Mia
I am pregnant right now,and have lost most of the desire to eat meat.
Before I got pregnant, I ate some form of meat everyday, and then after preg, I couoldn't stand it. Not even the smell of it. Made me feel ill.
Now towards the end of the pregnancy, I am finding that I can TOLERATE meat, but it's not something I ever crave at all, like I use to before pregnancy.k
I was a bit worried about this earlier in preg. but figured that if my body and foetus really needed it, I would have some desire for it. I do eat eggs, and all dairy, and sometimes I will eat chicken, but red meat is not on my diet. Very rarely, do I have it.

Weston Price documented that members of populations whose diets were predominantly vegetarian possessed significantly less robust health than members of more carnivorous populations.
