Pubic bone pain after childbirth

Posted by Jennifer [274.1461] on July 20, 2005 at 22:24:56:

I just gave birth to my daughter 8 days ago. I started having pubic bone pain in about my 6th month. I still have it and it pops and clicks when I walk and is somewhat painful. I thought after I gave birth it would go away.

Anyone else had this problem? What can I do to help it tighten back up?

Hi Jennifer,

You probably have cracked the pubic bone and will need to take a bone strengthening med such as Pamindronate to quickly rebuild it. Fosamax will take years.

Ask the doc to do a Dexa Bone Scan to prove the break if there is any doubt.

You have a ligament that was stretched - it's probably less "bone" than that.
It would be a good idea to go to a chiropractor and then work on keeping limber. When a ligament is like this, it tightens can cause you to be out of alignment.

How did she crack it? I think she would have had more intense pain sooner after the childbirth - like the day of and day after...
Doesn't hurt to check this option, but a ligament is the more likely issue.

Hi, Jennifer.

This is normal, although extended, softening of the pubic interarticular ligament that will eventually resolve itself. However, your doc knows about the commercial pelvic support band that is standard for this (yes it is that common). Ask him about it. It is like a truss and not that uncomfortable to wear.

Let us know how you do. You should get immediate relief--if it is properly fitted.

Walt

Hi Michele,

Pressure on the pelvis, a fall, trauma to the pubic bone, osteoporosis, high thyroid can all be suspect.
A Dexa Scan is still worthwhile..

If a person hops gently on one leg and causes the pain in the pubic area, that would point at a fracture.
If no pain is caused when hopping vigourosly a fracture is not likely.

Here is a link which explains various causes of osteoporosis.

Hi Michele,

A ligament attaches to bone. Just as with Plantar Fasciitis, when a ligament is stretched, a bone spur can occur if the bone is weakened in some way.

Bone strenthening meds, gentle pressure and reduced demand on that part of the body is required until healing occurs.
A Dexa Bone Scan can make the diagnosis.

Ron, this happens normally during pregnancy especially during 2nd pregnancies because the area is weakened from the previous one. Mine was excruciating. I don't have osteoporosis.

I am aware of what you are stating; being that I've had two children - and worked for years with the body in terms of dance, yoga, myoskeletal therapy ---her complaint it normal and is nothing to do with a fracture I am sure.
Also, that hopping thing is BUNK!
I have worked with people that have had that in DANCE (where you normally DO hop or jump on one leg) and the next day they were fine.

What you state (the hopping thing) is a POSSIBLE clue but NOT a diagnoses by any stretch.
(no pun intended :)

Hi Carol,

There is no reason to suffer if there is a crack in the bone..
Ask your doc about Pamindronate to rebuild bone and promote quicker healing.

If it keeps clicking it will never heal solidly.
