BIRTH CONTROL CRISIS

Posted by So confused on December 18, 1998 at 11:26:22:

Dr. Stoll, my own gynecologist isn't being frank with me
or my concerns, and this has caused me to talk to R.N.'s
for other information, all of which varies from person to
person.
Against my doctor's instructions, I decided to take the Pill
today, to begin it now, two weeks before I have my period
usually. She told me to start the Sunday after my period.
The reason why I started early was because I am going to
Europe to see my boyfriend in 2 weeks, and I will only be
there for 3 weeks. I hardly ever get to see him. the reason
why I wanted the Pill prescribed was because I wanted our time together to be more enjoyable, and the birth control more convenient.
I know what I'm doing will irregulate my cycle for a few months and cause spotting, but I think those things are
minor concerns, considering that I do not get to see my
boyfriend very often.
My question is, in taking it two weeks before my period,
am I making it more effective my getting a head start on
putting the hormones in my body, or am I causing the
medication to be less effective. According to my doctor's
directions, I would not even be able to use the birth control solely at all on my trip to Europe, and that would
make me think it's not worth taking at all in the first
place. I wanted to use it for this trip.
What can you tell me? About starting it now, opposed to
the day of my first bleeding? If I stopped now, and decided to follow the doctor's directions, would my cycle be too
messed up and unreliable from just taking that one pill
yesterday? I have a back-up method of contraception ready,
two in fact, but I am questioning the efficacy of the Pill,
considering the time frame.
Please help me soon. time is precious!

I took birth control pills for 2 1/2 years until recently, I quit because of my Candida/LGS problem. My doctor told me I could start them whenever, it did not matter, but that it would be about 1 month before it was safe to solely rely on the pills for birth control. I never had any problems with bleeding or regulation and did not get pregnant. Hope this helps.

Dear So,

I think your only risk is pregnancy. You just got the pills started too late for the 99% effectiveness they are famous for.

Perhaps you should go to the reference librarian at your local library and read about several different birth control pills in the PDR. I think you will find that what Robin says to be the "gold standard".

"Back up" time.

Walt

Robin and Dr. Stoll, if you are reading this I just want
you to know that I appreciate how quickly you responded
to my question. I seem to get different answers from everyone I ask about the Pill, but you gave me peace of mind
Robin. Thankyou very much. :-)
