Dear Georgina,
Like many chronic problems, the best solution is prevention. That is a little late once the damage is done.
HOWEVER, those who have had a child with this condition are a little more likely to learn how to never have something like that happen again.
If everyone would read Paavo Airola, ND's classic "Every Woman's Book" (at least 2 years before conception) there would be less than 1% of the birth defects we see today. There would be much less hyperactivity, learning deficiencies and aggressive children as well. He died about 10 years ago but his family continues to keep this essential knowledge in print.
There has been a lot learned in the past 10 years that, once the reader is sensitized to the process, would stick out like sore thumbs in the recent literature.
Let us know what you learn.

I too had a child with Potters Syndrome and although it was 14 years ago I am still searching for answers. This is the first page on the internet that I have come accross with regards Potters Syndrome. My baby lived for 5 hours and looked perfect. I found it very hard to digest that he would never live.
I had no counselling to get over his death and although I have since given birth to 2 healthy children, theres not a day goes by when I dont think of him.

Dear Fiona,
This was not YOUR fault but any blame can be laid at the door of the intentionally ignorant conventional medical monopoly.
If you are planning any more children (or if you just want some peace) read a copy of the classic by Paavo Airola, ND: "Every Woman's Book". The father to be needs to read it too (at least 2 years PRIOR to conception).

My husband has read in the August issue of Natural Muscular Development that swallowing a mans' semen reduces a womans' chances of contracting the fatal disease which strikes one in 29 pregnant women. At first I didn't believe it until he showed me the article which states research evidence on the part of the Dutch medical researchers. Since I am pregnant, my husband now demands that I swallow his semen regularly
to avoid the deadly disease. I feel demeaned. What should I do?

Dear Diane,
Perhaps some of the Dutch researchers were, shall we say, distracted while evaluating their data, which could have caused statistical bias and inaccuracy. I'd guess that swallowing sperm woudn't raise a woman's protein and magnesium levels to the point where it'd be preventive of preeclampsia. It's also possible that excessive ejaculation could lower a man's serum zinc levels. When I had mild pregnancy-induced hypertension with my second pregnancy, what really got me through it was magnesium sulfate injections weekly until full-term, and perhaps most importantly, my husband's loving support and continued attraction to my hugely pregnant body. We had a lot of mutually loving vaginal intercourse, and we also took the time to really talk about whatever issues were going on in our lives and come to resolution about problems. Pardon my directness, but it sounds to me like your husband might have some issues about having intercourse with you during pregnancy. Under no circumstances should you engage in an activity that causes you to feel demeaned. Perhaps talking it through with each other or doing psychotherapy together would help. My husband and I went to a psychologist during a rough stretch in our marriage a few years ago and found it really helpful. There's certainly no shame in going to a psychotherapist. Have a wonderful, healthy pregnancy and a beautiful, healthy child!
Lots of love from one mom to another,
Kyra

Oh boy, every scoundrel’s dream; a good line with the full weight of medical authority behind it! Never mind that it comes from a muscle magazine. "Come here, honey, it’s time for your mineral supplement."
Call me jaded, but I’m with Kyra on this one. Papa’s beating around the bush, so to speak.

Thank You so much Kyra and Jim for your help and support. I think variety is best. It wouldn't hurt to supplement my diet with proper minerals and it wouldn't hurt to please my husband either.
It's nice to know that semen has some health benefits. Additionally, unless there is some type of infection, it is sterile, natural and pure anyway. With the exception of breast milk, I don't think us women can say the same for ourselves! My feelings of being demeaned were most certainly caused by a hormonal mood swing which can occur quite often during times of pregnancy. Besides, if you Love the man, you shouldn't feel demeaned anyway, especially when
he most always cares enough to please you.

Dear Diane,
Both Kyra & Jim are right. From your last note, so are you! When I was in medical school, (40 years ago) it had already been known for more than 20 years that the ideal treatment for eclampsia was injections of massive doses of magnesium sulfate IM. This worked beautifully. However, at that time no one tumbled to the fact that the condition was mostly caused by a deficiency of magnesium. This was just another "treatment", following the allopathic paradigm of waiting till the disease was bad & then treating the symptoms.
Even now, most physicians haven't made the connection & wait till the woman is seriously ill with pre-eclampsia before offering the magnesium.
At least a gram of easily absorbed (oral) elemental magnesium, daily, would prevent nearly all pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
There IS magnesium in semen but not nearly enough to be THAT effective, although a large % of women would be borderline enough to get benefits from daily semem ingestion. It may be more fun to get it via semen but the dose is not enough to be universally effective for those women seriously deficient. However, we still are learning the lesson of the simplistic allopathic paradigm: one thing is rarely the cause of anything. There may be many as yet unknown factors in semen that would add to the benefit of the magnesium taken alone. The most easily absorbed magnesium presently on the market is magnesium glycinate, aspartate & orotate.
Anyone contemplating pregnancy should at least read (father & mother) a copy of Paavo Airola, ND's classic "Every Woman's Book" at least 2 years prior to conception.

Dear Amber,
It begins to look like the smoking gun for pre-eclampsia is a low intracellular magnesium.
When the person shows up with eclampsia we give then massive doses of injectable magnesium to stop the convulsions & bring down the BP.
The only reason why conventional medical docs don't prevent this problem with preventive oral magnesium, is that we are taught to treat problems not prevent them.
Oral may not be enough to resolve this--depending on the person. However, any doc that does not know enough to offer an easily absorbable oral magnesium to a patient, who has already had the problem with a previous pregnancy, is not the doc I would be going to.
A gram of elemental magnesium twice a day cannot possibly harm you or your pregnancy whereas its lack can kill both of you.

To Walt,
Im writting on the behalf of my Auntie who just gave bith to a baby boy who died of Potter's Syndrome. The doctor said it is also known as Renal. I wrote to you before but you did'nt tell me specificly what was the cause from.. Just a brief note about the birth my Auntie gave birth at 5 months as they told her if she carried it for the whole 9 months it be born still born. The baby was born with out any oragans accept heart, lungs and brains. She also did'nt have any fluid in the bag. My Auntie was also told ten years after her first child that she could'nt have children as she had a cist on her overies.. Would this have some cause of the babies death? If you could tell me some causes of potters syndrom it would be much appreciated as my Auntie blames her self because of her babies death..

Dear Georgina,
You can reaassure your auntie that the blame belongs to the conventional medical monopoly, not to her. The prevention of this terrible problem has been known for at least 40 years but because it was discovered by a Naturopath, (competition to the monopoly) it has been totally ignored.
ANYONE comtemplating pregnancy, who cares to have as perfect a pregnancy & child as it is possible to have, needs to read the culmination of a life's work by Paavo Airola, ND: "Every Woman's Book". Both the mother AND father to be needs this information at least 2 years prior to conception.
Your auntie would be VERY reassured having read this information. THEN, she will get angry at her docs for having not told her this information that she could have used to have a normal child rather than what happened.
Once she has that anger, and wants to use it constructively, she should read Dean Black, PhD's little book "Health at the Croosroads". Call (800) 333-4290 for a copy OR ask her library to find her a copy.
Let us know what she learns.

I am currently in my 32nd week of pregnancy and learned today that a co-worker with whom I am in close proximity with has come down with Fifth disease. What are the complications associated with this?

Dear Carla,
Without incubating the virus in an egg for 2 weeks, there is NO WAY that any clinician can differentiate between virus 5th and rubella. Rubella is well known to cause birth defects so it is important for you to KNOW which is was.
So far as I know there is no danger from the virus 5th. The problem lies in physicians not caring enough to make a definitive diagnosis. I wonder if they would do the same for their own wife?

On june 18, 1998 I had a procedure called a d &e because our baby was also diagnosed with Potter's Syndrome. Our baby also had under developed kidneys which resulted in no amniotic fluid, among other problems. My husband and I were devasted when we were informed. I was 5 months pregnant. This was our second let down. My first pregnancy last year resulted in Turner's Syndorme which resulted wtih a miscarriage. I would like to know more about Potter's Syndrome and will take the advice on reading the book suggested. I know God will bless us with a healthy baby in the future.
Thank you

This week the NY Times reported that Dr. Spock is now recommending, in his soon-to-be-released book, that children only be given milk products until the age of 2. After that they should be on a vegetarian diet. Apparently, this revelation came to him after he sufferred a debilitating illness about 10 years ago and, with a vegetarian diet and exercise, he recovered to such a remarkable extent that he led as full a life as possible until his death recently. The report goes on to say that a number of pediatricians do not support him saying that meats and milk are essential for young children.
It will be interesting to see in a few years, he proves to be ahead of his time or too radical in his thinking.

Dear Alan,
Thanks for bringing this up!
Those pediatricians who say foolish things like this are intentionally ignorant & should not be in a business where they can charge for health advice.
ANY knowledgable nutritionist knows that both milk & meat cause a lot more damage than they do good for the "industrial" human. Remember, we MDs still have less than one course in nutrition (on the average) during our entire training. Yet we have so much power that we can force everyone to come to us for nutritional advice. Notice the disclaimer attached to ANY nutritional advice: "Be sure to consult with your doctor about this!"
At least 90% of all recurrent ear infections are directly caused by dairy products. What would the poor Pediatrician do without his/her bread & butter?
Unfortunately, pediatricians are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning about real nutrition. They risk losing their license if they try to help their patients that way. Since MDs have basically no training in that area anyhow, it is not hard for parents to learn a lot more than the pediatrician knows any way
Dr Spock (with whom I studied before going to medical school) has ALWAYS been ahead of the rest of his profession. Those who wait for their conventional docs to catch up with his wisdom will have grandchildren before that happens. They certainly will not be able to apply it to their OWN children.
