Pilonidal cyst with Psoriasis

Posted by BEN on December 08, 1999 at 01:23:16:

Hi Dr. Stoll:

I have read the achives and every possible listing I could find on the 'net' regarding Pilonidal conditions. I, as many others, thank you for providing the BEST site - with such wonderful detailed information - this is what the internet should be!

I have a pilonidal cyst. It stayed dormant until I was in my mid-20's, then that inevitable fall on ice did it! I lived with the occassional flare-up for the next ten or so years. Two years ago I developed the sinus, which, as long as it remains open, drains and eliminates discomfort. I also have psoriasis, so the sinus becomes covered with skin on a daily basis. As long as I keep removing the skin it keeps draining. Surgery for me is a double edged sword. I fear the psoriasis will create havoc with the wound healing, and my physician is unable to allay my fears. The area itches terribly, but I cannot be sure whether this is the cyst or the psorisis. I noticed last month a second sinus developing, so I must make a descision soon. I want to make a good one and wonder if you have ever treated or known cases of surgery being done on Pilonidal cysts on patients with psoriasis.

I have lived with this condition for the better part of 20 years. Over the past year the sinus drains continually, but pain is minimal. I have read so many horror stories on the surgery that I would really rather avoid it, but would would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi, BEN.

Were this me, I would first get rid of the psoriasis. See what you can find with the search engine. The same approach that works for eczema would work for psoriasis If you have more quesitons, write again.

I am glad to hear that your doc will not reassure you about the possible negative effects of the psoriasis with pilonidal surgery. That would worry me too.

You might try the tea tree oil for reducing the symptoms of the sinus. Other than that, the best I would know is trying the surgery for the 50% chance of cure. At least 50% is better than you have now.

Hi again Dr. Stoll:

Thank you kindly for your response, it was pretty much what I anticipated. However, I am confused now. In your response you state:

I was [apparently] misinformed that psoriasis is a chronic affliction of which there is no known cure. I have had great success with topical steroid creams and medicated shampoos to the point that I no longer have any scaling on my scalp or body. The only areas which I cannot seem to clear are my inner ears and my fingernails. Wounds seem to be the most vulnerable to attack, i.e. the constant 'skinning over' of my pilonidal sinus cavity. I fear that even though I may not have any signs of active psoriasis in the area (with the exception of the sinus cavity), that it is still there just waiting for an opportunity and that a surgery could bring on an attack and deter or even prevent proper healing. I tried the search as you suggested and have spent several hours reading. Problem is I have been victim before by snake oil salesmen. Could you consider suggesting a site or pointing a finger?

Again I thank you for providing one of the most infomative and remarkable sites on the internet. Simply wonderful!

Hi, Ben.

When I was in medical school, they "knew" that there was no cure for atherosclerosis (the cause of nearly all heart attacks and strokes--among other things). About that same time Dr Pritikin was healing atherosclerosis routinely and his program still does. However, since we omniscient doctors "knew" that it was incurable, he was called a quack without investigating his results. Millions have died prematurely & unnecessarily, in the past 40 years just because the solution made mo money for the medical monopoly.

NOW, of course, any knowledgable physician knows that atherosclerosis is totally reversable with a 10% fat diet, skilled relaxation and exercise. 90% of all who do it are free of symptoms within a month although they had already been told that their only option was surgery. How many physicians, even now, tell their patients this--in relation to how many are sent for bypass????

Psoriasis IS curable and I have seen many in my own practice. It takes learning and work on the part of the person who is ready to get rid of it and MY advice is free. What would I have to gain by lying to you?

Go to the search engine. There are 2 articles there by John that could get you started. Next, I would start the essential oils on the homepage for this 'site and learn about SR, LGS and Candida. All are in the glossary, archives, homepage and search engine.

As your psoriasis clears up, I hope you will take the time to share your experiences with the BB participants. Testimonials change more peoples' minds than anything I can say.

Walt
