PLEASE get copies of your med records!

Hi,

For the last 20+ years, I have worked as a medical transcriptionist. I have witnessed many, many changes in the medical field, most of them bad.

Today, more and more hospitals, clinics, out-patient diagnostic facilities, and private practices are outsourcing their medical transcription. Rather than hiring American workers (who pay taxes and contribute to the U.S. economy), they want to save 0.02 per line by sending the dictations overseas to India.

Indians make very little compared to us, but it is probably a fairly decent living over there. Nothing personal against them, but most of the Indian medical transcriptions DO NOT have even a cursory mastery of the English language, i.e. they are illiterate. The quality of the transcriptions coming back from India is absolutely atrocious!! Nobody cares--the docs don't care and the hospitals don't care because they are saving a few bucks. The patients don't even know because they have no clue what is in their charts.

As the patient, YOU own your medical records even though the doc/clinic/hospital has custody of them. They are your property. You should obtain copies of all of your medical records to: (1) Check for errors and omissions. (2) Have on hand--put them in a safe place in your home--in case of medical emergency. (3) Have for future medical practitioners so that they know your history and can treat you properly. (4) Familiarize yourself with the medical terminology so that you can communicate effectively with your treating physicians/practitioners.

If you notice anything amiss in your records, COMPLAIN to the medical records department and DEMAND that the report be CORRECTED/AMENDED.

Please, please do this TODAY before something happens to you and that information is needed.

Thanks, Tired!

I have been preaching this for at least 45 years! I am glad to hear that others are picking up the banner.

Keep up the good workQ

Walt
