Cure for Periodic Limb Movements?

Dear Dr. Stoll,

My 55 year old husband's legs twitch every 15-20 seconds when first falling alseep. It lasts about an hour. This started a few years ago.

At first I thought it was Restless Leg Syndrome...but he says he does not have the symptom of feeling "crawly" in his legs...so I researched more and discovered this other term, "Periodic Limb Movements" for a similar reaction...but without the "crawly things in the leg feeling."
His only brother has it too. Is it genetic? What can be done besides medication? I am wondering if this is an outward sign of a more serious problem for him....sleep apnea? neurological?....plus he is keeping me awake at night!
Any thoughts?
AC

Hi, AC.

To give you an example: In the medical textbook are listed the many possible symptoms of "measles". I have never seen any case of measles that had more than 1/3rd of all the symptoms listed.

This is "restless leg syndrome" until proven otherwise---regardless of what other fancy name anyone wants to place on it. The solution will not be changed by any splitting hairs about the name.

There is a genetic propensity for this but only in that the susceptibility will follow family lines. The exact same set of contributing factors, in any group of people, will produce conditions as different as Ulcerative Colitis, arthritis, restless leg syndrome, panic attacks, glandular conditions, cancer, hypertension, coronary artery disease, etc., etc.----DEPENDING on the genetic susceptibility of that individual.

Since we still cannot deal with the genetic susceptibilities, we are left with dealing with the environmental factors that "upregulate" or "downregulate" the genetic mechanisms.

SO, the first thing to do is to convince him that the above is so. The way to do that the most quickly is for him to get at least 3 deep, total-body, therapeutic massages a week for 2 weeks hand running. By then he will feel so much better, and you (both) will see that the restless leg problem will be gone, that you both will know that I am right.

The problem is that, although your both being convinced is critical--or he will not do what is needed to resolve it-- the improvement will not last more than a few weeks. He has to deal with his total-body bracing by doing SR properly and find out if low intracellular magnesium is contributing to the bracing.

See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and go where it leads you. Focus on bracing, SR, magnesium AND restless leg syndrome in the archives. I have made a link to that below but that may not be the first place for either of you to go.

As he gets over this message his body mind is sending him, please share his experiences with the BB so others with this same warning will not have to suffer the consequences of ignoring it.

Walt
