Any ideas on what I'm experiencing?

Posted by Christie on April 30, 2002 at 10:47:15:

Hi all,

A few months ago I started experiencing little red patches on my face and neck. Here's exactly what I'm noticing...please give ideas or advice. I had a spot on my neck while at the general practioner a couple of months ago and he said it looked like contact dermatitis and to put cortizone cream on it. I have since changed to free and clear detergent,do not use any fabric softener, and now use a sensitive skin/hypoallergenic face soap. I also did not make any changes in make-up or skin products prior to experiencing my first symptoms.

1. I have a very fair complexion

2. The spots are usually about the size of a dime or nickel but not perfectly rounded

3. The spots are just a tad raised, just slightly pinker in color than my normal complexion , never itch, are not flaky, and do not ever become sore.

Thanks for any ideas!!!!!

It could also be rosacea. Normally dermatitis would itch or be flaky. Rosacea is a light pink/rednes to the face, and may not itch. Is it kind of dry feeling?

Be careful with using cortisone on your face. Try and get the lowest % of cortisone, like 0.5% or 1% which would be hydrocortisone. I have heard that constant and regular use of cortisone creams can result in thinning of the skin. Be very sparing with it.

Hi, Christie.

Your doc is probably right. My guess as to caues would be something in your clothes (detergent, fabric softener, synthetic something in the collar. etc). Even perfume, if you tend to put it there........

Although cortisone cream will probably help, eliminating the cause is the only permanent answer.

Let us know how you do.

It's reassuring to know that from what I have described, you agree with my physician Dr. Stoll.

I'm going to start paying better attention as to when these "spots" occur. Perhaps I can then eliminate the cause instead of just covering up the flashing light :o) as Dr. Stoll would say!

I have Acne Rosecea and it does look like this. My spots usually start with a little white bump and aren't raised after a while. Doctor prescribed minocin capsules and I've heard that it will always be necessary to take them.

Hi, Cheezi.

Have you read the rosacea archives yet?

Yes, Dr. Stoll. I've read the rosacea archives now. It seems that I might be doing more harm than good by using the antibiotic that my physician prescribed. I'm sure that it probably counteracts what I'm doing to avoid problems with Yeast Syndrome, which I'm sure I had before I started supplementing (vaginal yeast infections, thrush, tinea versicolor, toenail fungus). Unless I've misunderstood what you're saying, I should discontinue using the antibiotic and try to control stress.

My one concern is about the red marks that already exist. There are small red dots and one spider vein-like patch. Will these always be visible or can I look for them to disappear at some point?

Thanks, Cheezi.

If it were me, I CERTAINLY would stop the antibiotics. I would then concentrate on resolving the LGS AND the C-RS (the most directly related mechanism to Rosacea). Stress management is but the most important single thing in that direction.

The skin changes will eventually fade (just like a scar) once the causes are gone.

Let us know how you do.

Namaste`
