Dr. Stoll, others....Recommended salt each day?

Posted by Sapphire [422.532] on June 26, 2004 at 12:17:53:

How much salt is recommended each day? I have osteoporosis and I've read that too much salt can contribute to this. What is the minimum, and maximum, assuming no extreme exercise (sweating)?

Note: one teaspoon of salt = 2400 milligrams = 2.4 grams

Also, I found this site that discusses a 2 gram per day sodium diet.

Hi, Sapphire.

One of the most ancient senses our bodies have is the sense of taste for salt. If we just eat a wholesome diet, our body will tell us how much mineral salt we need. The story of how animals decide how much salt thay need is in the salt archives. Humans have the same sense.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Dr. Stoll,

That helps a lot, thank you!

Also, per your advice in the archives, I'm using "Real Salt." Very delicious! =)

Hi Saphire,

If we did not cover this in the past, I hope you are
getting some iodine to support your thyroid.
Sea salt can be bought with added iodine.

some odd advice in there!

Hi,

I'm intrigued that they're recommending bread - which has high salt content - and then they lump milk in with cheese, which has added salt.

If you tend to eat foods you've made from scratch, from fresh ingredients, then adding salt to say, any serving of french fries won't do you harm unless you have a real health problem with salt... if you eat a lot of tinned food you may be eating a lot of salt - but you'll probably be turned off it after a while, as Walt indicates. I know that I can sometimes eat take-away curry or tinned soup, but on other days I can't go near it...because I can taste the salt. After heavy exercise and sweating, of course, you can't even taste salt, and that means you need it!

I love the way that website recommended popcorn without salt. I'd rather not bother!!!

Jane

I don't know how anyone could recomend how much salt we should consume. Now their Might be a bare minimum we need but I think it would depend on SO many factors, we would probably have to be tested every day to be sure.

I don't think everyone releases the same amount when sweating or in their urine. The kidneys are supposed to regulate sodium but what if they don't and/or someone is Salt Sensitive, and what about the weather, which could make us release, need more and then what about things that work as diuretics.

Around 80' when they warned about salt use, my dad cut its use and I couldn't function in the heat, without taking salt tabs, probably from kidney damage. I got better and he had a massive heart atatck. I went with what worked and he listened to the EXperts. My Dr didn't have any idea why I needed SO much but he said to take it. Since I had to pop a tab every 15 min if doing physical work in the heat, I Needed to know why. Finding out how the kidneys work was as good as I could do since I thought that I might have to go see a dozen Drs before i found one who knew or do the right test and the majority would probably tell me I was nuts for taking it like my dad did and I didn't need the confusion and hassle. Since i had Always used a good bit of salt, and used to tell mom, I could Smell there wasn't enough on food when she would tell me that she put salt IN the food. seemed to be that I wanted or needed to Taste the salt as if I just shook some into my mouth as opposed to having it In the food so wanted it on top.

When I had to take the tabs, Salting food, making it White Didn't work and I think the food absorbs the salt and it didn't get into my blood stream the way taking it straight did since a tab with water worked and fast, while extrat salt on food Didn't at all.

My case was extreme but it taught me a lot about salt, as did my dads. In CCU, he told me to Do what I wanted to. He said HE was the one that was wrong. He listened to, one size fits all...

Ron,

The beauty of using "RealSalt" is that the correct amount of iodine is naturally included. Like the Campbell Soup ditty: "It is all in there!"
