I just wanted to share my personal experience and one tip that I have for everyone that suffers from this blasted pilonidal cyst problem.
After taking a cross country drive and stopping in Arizona 16 years ago (I was 23 at the time) I had an aching in my lower back. I remember calling my father (who had suffered through many hemroid surgeries) and describing my pain. I guess I thought it was hemroids. He said it did not sound like the same thing.
After returning to LA where I lived, I noticed some spotting on my underwear. I went to my favorite surgeon (who has just done a bilateral hernia repair on me 6 months earlier -- any connection??) and he promptly had me admitted for surgery. I asked no questions at the time and the surgery went fine. It took 3 weeks to granulate and heal. My roommates got a good laugh when the home care nurse would show up in the morning and evening to change the dressing. (I wasn't going to ask my roommates to help).
I occasionally get some soreness or irriation. I will try to take more baths during that time and one thing I have found that really helps is TUCKS pads. I can actually wipe the area with it and leave it there for 10 minutes or so. Luckily, I have not been back to a doctor for this problem and I hope to keep it that way.
One interesting footnote: I have a 10 month old boy and he was born with a midline sinus that we just had surgically removed today. I was surfing the web for information and followed this thread. Very supportive information. I wish everyone luck with this problem.

Thanks for your success story. We need your stories more than we do the ones that weren't so successful!
Good healing for your son.
Thank you

Thanks, Steve.
Since the vast majority of "midline sinuses" in children never become active, I hope the surgery does not make it become active.
