What to do now!!!

Posted by May on July 21, 2002 at 04:57:33:

My son had his Pilonidal Sinus operated on 5 months ago. We were very close to complete healing and then he got an infection in it. After two 10 day courses of antiboitics he is left with an opening of about 1.5cm's which has a sinus running upwards about 3cm deep and only about 3/4cm in diameter. He is having salt baths twice a day and I am packing it with an Alginate riddon dressing. The trouble is that we are getting fresh blood from the sinus soaking the dressing. Can you tell me if this is normal or should we be doing something else. I feel that the sinus is so small in diameter that when the packing is inserted that it is causing trauma to the wound.
Any imput would be appreicated.
Thanks May

Hi, May.

This means that the surgery has been a failure--as so many are.

It is up to his surgeon to manage this from here on but do not be surprised if he suggests another, wider, excision.

In the meantime, I certainly would be keeping the wound open to avoid another cyst and using the hot compresses rather than "salt soaks" (see the archives).

There are many alternative options in the archives about pilonidal which may of may not help--at least they will not harm.

Let us know how he does.

Walt
