Dear Dr.
I'm 20 years old and have no one to turn to on this, I live alone. I am basically wondering what the heck is wrong with me. About 2 years ago I noticed a pain on my tailbone when I reached a Peak in "sexual Contact", or during Ejaculation, Eitherway it was more or less just a quick "shock" felling u know? But it was VERY Unbearable, it brought me to my knee's a few times, well after the first time I felt it... I was like what the heck!? Is this? So I decided to feel around back there. To My Suprise I felt a large VERY HARD "lump" pertruding out from the Lowest Spot on my tailbone, about 3 inches down from the top of my Bumm Cheeks off centered to the left. I was very scared not knowing if this was a tumor or whatever so, I went to the doctor.... he said it was a PiloNidal Syst and that I can live with it that they are usually VERY VERY VERY painless, unless it ruptures..Well, I said "fine" and all. He advised me to "live" with it and Skip getting the surgery. 2 years passed and no pain whatsoever, a few random "ejaculation pains" but no "real" pain.... Well its now been 2 years, and I recently drove on a trip to atlanta, and when I woke up the next morning(after a 12 hr drive) I was In CRUCIAL pain.... coming from my tailbone area.... I reached back to feel a little lump(at the top of my Cheeks off Centered to the left)... looked in the mirror, and thought "wow, a Pimple".... and layed back down... after another day of pain, I thought.. to myself this can't be a Pimple, so I figured it was a Boil, since it was growing with size every day.... another day passed and pain Increased... I decided to go see my doctor, A Different doctor that diagnosed my first "cyst"... This Doctor told me this new lump was a a PiloCyst.... Now I am totally confused? Is the first one a Cyst also... Its still there did this new one tunnel off of it? Whats going on? or is the First one not a cyst at all.. I don't know what to think, One thing that leads me to beleive 1 of the 2 doctors is wrong is that these 2 "lumps" are in very different spots on my tailbone, and they came along very different. The 1st one just showed up one day full blown... at its size, but showed no pain except during sexual Intercourse(as far as I know, unless it grew in size Painlessly) By all the archives and Pictures I have seen this 1st "lump" is not in the "spot" for Pilo Cysts... its at the bottom of my tailbone, this new "lump" is in the "perfect spot" for a pilo at the top, is this true? or can they Show Up anywhere? My other point is this: Why was the first lump so painless? and this new "lump" is very red and tender and is smaller and "Squooshy" like a Pimple? On the other hand the original lump, (as far as I know) Just showed up hard as a rock, I mean... its so hard if I didn't know anybetter I would think it was part of my bone, except for the fact that the Dr. originally Diagnosed it as a Pilo...and it pertrudes off so you can actually "grab" it on all sides if you try. very big Differences between these 2 lumps... Whats your best guess? are they both Pilo? And if so.. why is the first so Painless? It didn't Drain or anything, no pain whatsoever, unless I sat on it Directly. My worst fear is that these are both pilo, and the orignal ruptured, and is not Draining... but while draining its tunneling off, and Creating "another" lump/Cyst... if these archives are correct, getting 1 pilo removed is extremly painful, I can Imagine Removing 2. If this first lump, is a Pilo Afterall, I fear from the size of the "lump" that the Hole itself will probably be the size of a golfball. I have been reading ALL the archives and as far as I know, this new "lump" is definatly a Pilo, what do I do? I haven't found the spot on the site, that everyone is talking about...please someone explain these heat Compression treatments to me. After all these questions, One thing I do know: I am Very Scared, I have no father or mother to turn to for help, actually no family whatsoever, I h

No advice, but from a fellow cyst sufferer who is married to a police officer, good luck in the academy and in your career. Stay safe!!

To Aspiring Cop:
Hot compresses are a good first aid treatment for a localized infection, such as you have.
This is one way of doing it: Soak a thick folded washcloth in very hot water, wring out the excess, and apply to the infected area. After a couple minutes, when it has cooled slightly, refold the compress to expose a hot interior surface, and apply to the area again. When this cools, again soak the compress in hot water, and repeat.
Dr. Stoll recommends using hot compresses for five minutes every hour. In nursing school, we learned that hot compresses can be applied for 20 to 30 minutes every two hours. Either way is fine, whatever you can work into your schedule.
Applying moist heat to an infected area will help the body to heal up the infection. Or it can bring it to a head, so that it can be drained. This method is good for pimples and boils also. I have used hot compresses (we called them warm soaks) on many of my patients, with good results.
If the cyst does begin to drain, you can use a clean tissue or paper napkin to press out the pus. If it continues to drain a little afterwards, you can apply a large bandaid, or a folded gauze pad taped in place, until it's time for the next warm soak.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

OK, first of all, I, too, suffer with this silly ailment/disease/whatever you want to call it.
Pilonidal cysts, unlike pimples, do not come to a head and go away on their own. They might 'lie low' and go dormant for a while but can flare up at any given time because the entire cyst cavity (sinuses) can only be totally removed via a pilonidal cystectomy, the technical name for the operation to remove the cyst.
A person's cyst 'can' be relatively painless for years and not bother them. Then, out of nowhere, it can rear its ugly head and start draining or whatever it's going to do.
A good website that's actually dedicated to pilonidal disease is http://www.pilonidal.org. The creator of the site experienced a pilonidal cyst and had full surgical removal. You will find a Living With It, Surgical Options Section, just to name a few 'parts' of the website. It is a good place to read up on the subject to arm yourself with knowledge.
No home remedy is going to 'cure' a pilonidal cyst. They can help alleviate some of the symptoms, though. Often, full surgical removal is the only route that is going to really help since you have the continually-infecting hair follicles in there that aren't being dealt with. Now, some people's cysts don't have hair in them--doctors don't know why, though.
I could go on and on, but you get the point I'm trying to make, hopefully.
It sounds to me like you could have two cysts on your tailbone, and one is giving you fits right now...
Once you read up on the subject, you will really be doing yourself a favor because when you know what you're dealing with, you can focus better on 'getting better.'
Hope this helps,
E

Let me ask a dumb question, since I know nothing about these cysts. When I used to have acne and got some particularly large, very inflammed pimple that was very swollen, my doc would inject an antibiotic directly into it and it would start clearing up literally overnight. Can they do that with these?

Hi, Young.
I really do not have anything to offer trhat is not already in the archives.
If I had this problem I would treat it conservatively.

Hi,
Both my sister and my father had one of these in their youth, and they both had it surgically removed. It was very painful for them (before, during, and after surgery). From what I understand, this "surgery" (or lancing) is fairly painful, and afterwards you have to keep the wound open to drain. My sister also said that the fluid that drains out smells worse than anything she could have imagined. But eventually, the wound healed, the pain went away, and neither of them has had a return of symptoms. They do both have a scar from the lancing however.
I do not know if any alternative therapies will help it go away or to relieve the symptoms. Personally, I would always try alternative remedies first. But sometimes you are in too much pain to do that.
I just wanted to share my family's experience with you. I hope you are doing well.
