For those who are feeling defeated, read on, there are some happy endings...
I found out I had a pilonidal cyst last August when I had to go to the emergency room to get it lanced because it was swollen and painful. The lancing itself was pretty painful, but was over quickly. I was told I probably needed surgery or it would come back. I found this website, hoping to be comforted by reading about other people's successes. Sadly, I was horrified after reading story upon story of horrible pain, surgery gone wrong, and numerous recurrances. I was terrified for my surgery. I swore to myself that if everything went well for me, I would come back to this site and write a positive letter about my experience to comfort some people, so here I am. I had the surgery in the middle of last August and was stitched closed. I had very little pain after the surgery, and took warm baths several times a day. The wound closed up on its own, and I was back at school within a month. It was uncomfortable to sit for several weeks, but that eventually passed. I know there is still the risk for a recurrance, but I am thankful for the positive experience I had, and I wanted to let others out there know that having a pilonidal cyst doesn't have to be the worst experience of your life. It is now one year later and I am currently cyst free and keeping my fingers crossed that I stay that way. Good luck.

First off, I'm glad you got it taken care of and are doing well.
Yes, these things CAN recur, but we just don't know if they will or not. I had to get mine taken care of, as it had ventured 2 inches from my tailbone. I didn't want to live with it, either.
I'm currently (and will forever be) keeping a watchful eye on the area and keeping those idiotic coarse hairs away from the area by shaving (later on, hot waxing). Even though this regimen is annoying, it has to be done, and I'll eventually get it down pat (LOL).
Good luck to you, too, and I hope you stay cyst-free for the rest of your life!
Elaine

Thank you Debbie for sharing your story, It is so nice to see that you are such as possitive person. I wish to be and feel like you. I guess having two surgeries for the same reason really has changed me completelly. Sometimes I am talking to other people, walking on the street, at work, window shopping, whatever... and find myself touching my tail bone. I believe I have become sucha paranoid and the worse part its that I can't help it. Sometimes when my friends see me feeling my bottom ask me if I am OK, the ones that know yield at me and ask me to stop. The only thing I ask God for me its not to go back to an operation room. Hope you won't have to be back either.
