Mallie.

If you have read all the archives you will likely do what I would do: Learn to live with it.

Let us know what you learn.

I just want to say that I know how these cysts feel, how scarey it is, and that you are doing a good thing by researching. I was only 15 when I had mine, so I didn't do any research myself.

I know they say you can learn to live with it, but for me that would have been very, very hard. I mean, here was a hole in my skin, draining or bleeding almost all the time, and mine was continually getting bigger, so I couldn't deal with it.

Maybe yours is a different kind than mine was, so maybe you can learn to live with it, but if you can't, just remember to keep researching before you decide to let anyone touch you, and make sure you're comfortable and informed about the statistics of the success of the surgery.

One thing I wish I would have done is more research before I let them do anything to the oringinal cyst, because after cutting me once, I was pretty much forced into another surgery, and then another (and final) surgery after that.

If you do have a z-plasy, make sure you go to someone that has a lot of experience doing them, because you obviously want the scar as minimal as possible. I hate my scar, but it's better than having the reoccurring cysts. Mine basically looks like a normal crack (on my bottom), but then my crack ends further down than normal, and you can see a sewn spot at the top of it. It's kind of weird, and I was nervous about how my boyfriend (now husband) would react to it, but it doesn't bother him at all.

I know this response is not too encouraging to you, and I appologize for that. But I just want you to go into this being very informed about everything. It's amazing how many people have suffered or know someone who has suffered from a cyst of this type.

Anyway, if you have any more questions you need answered by someone who has been through it, feel free to ask me. My sister had the same surgery, so between the two of us, I'm sure we can help you get through this.

I have posted several times before this, but I consider myself one of the more lucky ones. I had my first and only bout with the Pilonidal Cyst almost 20 years ago. I went to the surgeon that had done my hernia surgery only 6 months earlier since I didn't know who to go to. He diagnosed it as a Pilondal Cyst Absyss and said we had to operate within days as the infection was getting very bad. I did not hesitate as I trusted him completely. He did the removal and granulation healing (let his heal from the inside out method) approach. It took about 3 weeks of intense maintenance on the wound which consisted of my parents for one week and a home health nurse once in the morning and night. Once it healed, I have not had any major problems.

I do get an occasional "twinge" or "tingle" at which time I redouble my efforts to keep that area extra clean. Do not skip showers and take opportunities for long baths whenever you can. If you really cannot bathe often, I have found tucks pads or even baby wipes effective at keeping the area clean. I am also very careful to not bump my tailbone on anything as I have heard that can stimulate some problems - not shown to be true or confirmed elsewhere.

I do wish I would have had the time to do my research, but it did work out good for me. I wish you the same luck.

I think this BB is really terrific. There are lots of people here that will help you. Good luck.

BTW, I was 21 when this happened. I know how scared you are. Just do research and then make up your mind and have confidence in your decision.

Thanks, Steve.

You are living proof that 50% are cured by the first surgery. Besides, you have done a good job at helping yourself all these years.

Namaste`
