My daughter had, what we thought was a boil, on her upper, inner thigh. The dermotoligist assumed it was a boil and lanced it, it never went away, her primary treated her with antibiotics, it never went away and finally sent her to a surgeon. He said it was probably a sebaceous cyst and he removed it in the hospital under a local.
She got the stitches out yesterday. The doctor received the lab result and told her that it was a polonidal cyst, and in his 22 years of surgery, had never come across anything like this. Polonidal cysts are always on the back, near the tailbone. Any explanation?? This is driving us crazy. Could the lab have made a mistake? Please help. Thanks

There have been cases of Pilonidal's in other areas. Although it's not as common as thm being found near the tailbone ares it can still happen.

Loretta, have you looked in the archives? Having followed many posts about this type of cyst, I recall it's related to spina bifida and the cyst can have a very deep "tail"(? could be wrong about that label) but I know Walt has talked about it. Whether it could be that deep, I don't know.

Hi, Loretta.
Listen to Sally and Kathy. It IS very unusual but once you understand the embryological cause of this condition you will understand how this could happen. I have done my best to explain this in the archives. Others on this BB have tried to promote different theories of their cause--none of which could have possibly produced this. The embryological mechanism I learned in medical school 40 years ago is the only possible mechanism that could have caused this!
I sincerely doubt that the lab got the diagnosis wrong. They knew where the specimen came from and they would have been just as incredulous as everyone else has been.
Walt

Hi Loretta:
It does sound unusual. Could it perhaps be a dermoid cyst? They also contain hair.
You can see a picture of an ovarian dermoid cyst at: www.kumc.edu/instruction/medicine/pathology/ed/ch_18/c18_dermoid_gross...
