I have a sebaceous cyst on my scalp. My hairdresser accidentally cut it when cutting my hair. Most of it has oozed out, now all that remains is what looks to be a hard ball. It keeps poking through the hole but does not seem to want to come out. When I push slightly it starts to come out, but not fully. Is there anything that can be done to help draw it out? I have had them removed surgically years ago at quite a cost. I prefer not to go this route again.

Hi, Cathy.
Remember that a sebaceous cyst is caused by a blockage of the duct that leads from the sebgaceous gland to the surface of the body. That is why it is so important, when surgically removing one, to remove it intact--since that is the only way to know for sure that all the lining of the dilated gland is removed.
Your lining it still in there and this will continue to be a problem until you can, somehow, peel out the lining OR get a surgeon to do the same.
Hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Stoll:
I was extremely happy to locate your web site and find this information on sebaceous cysts. I have had recurring cysts under my arms for a couple of years, but they have gotten increasing worse the last couple of months. I want to know alternative treatment options (not including surgery) for the removal of these cysts. My doctor has lanced these in her office and prescribed antibiotics (I have no idea how she expected that to help). I have switched to Dry Idea (unscented) per her recommendation and I have still seen no improvement. Please recommend a treatment method, either naturally or prescription. Thank you kindly.

Hi, CJ.
Have you read the antiperspirant archives? I will bet that the "Dry Idea" is an antiperspirant and will give you a lot more underarm cysts.
Let us know what you learn.
