Dr Stoll,
My husband has a pilonidal cyst. When he had one before he was given a local anesthesia and experienced no problems that way. This time, 7yrs later, his new doctor wants to give him general. I'm wondering how common this is or if we should be worried. Seems unessasary to be totally put out just to make a little incicion (sp?). It wouldn't be such a big deal, but he has panic disorder and has never been 'under' before. It might freak him out. The surgeon didn't spend enough time with him to allow him to voice his concerns. Thanks for the help...

Also read this (from the same archive). A line in it says:
Please , if anyone wants to hospitalize you for an operation for previously untreated pilonidal disease, refuse the operation and go looking for another surgeon!"
Read the whole thing and you'll see why that line is there.

You may want to also check out the website pilinodal.org
It is specifically for this disease and gives many different options on how to handle this.
Hugs!

Hi, Concerned.
If they want to do a general this is not going to be "just a little incision".
Listen to Archive and Ex. Go to the pilonidal archives.
This is not another pilonidal problem. It is the same one that was not resolved by the first surgery.
One of the reasons surgeons make so much money is that they are supposed to take the time to fully explain to the patient what is going on. The surgeon who just cuts and runs with the money is a technician getting paid as a physician.
Let us know what you learn.
