My boyfriend developed a pilonidal cyst literally over night. He went to a doctor yesterday and soon they'll drain it as soon as it develops more. Looks like it was caught in the early stages.
The reason I'm posting is, his mother and aunt were diagnosed with the same problem and around his age (18yrs). What's spiked my interest is a comment his aunt made of Pilonidal Cysts being "most common in Scandinavians: Blonde Haired and Blue Eyed people" and from the research I've done on the web and on your site claims that's not true. It can effect most people with the right "environment."
I looked on your site for an answer to my question of hereditary and I couldn't find one.
So, is Pilonidal most common among Scandinavians who share the description of being "blonde haired and blue eyed?" Or is it just as equal with other people with the same causes?

My family's from the swedish side of germany/bavaria...Does that count? I was blonde up till I was 8, but I have brown eyes. I don't know anyone else except me who has the pilonidal though so I can't give you any more insight. Seems most people have first occurance of cyst in their teens (I was 17), when the sebacious glands become fully formed, or something like that...

I suppose so. But it strikes me as strange that she would make the assumption that it targets scandinavians. I had a sebacious cyst in my armpit when I was 16ish. My background is German/French/Italian and Irish, so, who knows! Looks like cysts favor a lot of people. *wink*

Hi, Terrie.
I know of no racial preference but the condition definitely IS inherited. There is suggestive evidence, since it is related to spina bifida, that adequate doses of folic acid (400 milligrams a day prior to and during the pregnancy) will prevent nearly all of them.
EVERYONE who ever gets a pilonidal problem has had the problem since before birth. It just depends upon how long they can live with it before it flares up.
The mechanism of causation is fully described in the archives. Once one understands it they are best armed with the information that will help prolong the time, or prevent entirely, when it will flare up. It also gives them the information needed to best live with it after it flares up.
It also gives the best % chance of cure with definitive surgery--and examples of a lot of the problems that are complcations of failed surgeries.
Hope this helps.
