Pilonial Cyst

Hi my name is Vanessa, and I had a cyst about 2 years ago. I went the first time to the ER because of pain that it was causing me. When I went the Dr tired to drain it, but at the time, nothing would come out. He put me on antibiotics, and told me to use hot baths. About a week later, I could almost not walk without the pain, I went back to the ER on Boxing Day, where they opened the cyst and drained it, and then I had to go back every day and have the packing changed.

About a week ago I had another flair up, and I went back to the ER, and she put me on meds again, the meds seemed to take the pain away, but I still have swelling in the same spot, it is about the size of a quarter. I went back to the DR's yet again today, because I finished the MEDS last night, and he told me that it is still there, and put me back on the same meds, and told me that he was pesismistic that it was going to go away. I am not sure what to do and I was wondering if someone would be able to help me. DO I keep taking the meds? or should I check into surgery?

Thanks
Vanessa

Hi, Vanessa.

Meds will NEVER be the solution for a pilonidal problem. Neither will "hot baths". Of course you have already learned THAT! You must at least use hot compresses (see the archives for hot soaks).

You need to spend a few hours devouring the archives about this rather than spend the endless hours you have already spent suffering and in the ER--let alone the $$$.

Then, by your understanding the embryological mechanisms behind this condition, and doing the conservative options, if you still have an uncontrollable problem, definitive surgery may be your option. YOU WILL NOT GET THIS THROUGH THE ER APPROACH! You will need a personal surgeon to make this decision for you and to DO the surgery. 50% of the time that is the end of it and 50% of the time that is the beginning of a new level of suffering.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

I agree to a point with Dr. Stoll about the care of a cyst. I don't agree with his stats for a reoccurance though. I found it not to be 50/50 but closer to 80/20. This information was received from my plastic surgeon who did my surgery for a pilonidal.

Also, remember, the longer you hold off on removal of a pilonidal, the more they tunnel.

See www.pilonidal.org for more information.

Thanks, Cathy.

Of course you mean 80% failure and 20% permanent success :o)?

Did you take the surgeon's word for it or did you actually read research saying that? If you read the research I would surely appreciate your posting it for us.

Walt

I did read that somewhere and I will have to look because I did not bookmark it. I know there are a lot of bad stories about this disease but most people only post the bad stuff. The good stories and first time success hardly ever get posted.

I will look for that statistic again and post it for you.
