My mother in law has Pilonidal sinus. It was first diagnosed seven years back. In the first instance, the doctor just drain the pause and gave medicines. Bit it again occurred three times and in all those three occasions, the cyst was removed by an operation and the cyst was sent to the lab for testing. But there was nothing serius in the result. She last operated two years back in New Delhi. Now it again occurred and would like to know form the experts that can it be permanently cured or not? What should be done now? Should it be operated again or better go through antibiotics. One of the doctor here advised to make a bigger operation by cutting major part of the surrounding area also and then do plastic surgery. Can anyone advice me on this option? I would be really very grateful for your comments on this.

Hi there, pilonidal sinus is a congenital condition, and surgery gives only 50% chance of cure. Failed surgery makes additional attempts less likely to succeed. Management with prevention of flare-ups (hair removal creams, donut pillows, hot compresses) are the best road but it is a bit late for that. Unfortunately after 3 failed surgeries the chances are low of any permanent resolution now. Read the pilonidal sinus archives to understand why (they are combined with the sebaceous cyst archives but you can just choose the Q and A strings that deal with pilonidal.)
Archive link is top right on main BB page.
Good luck
