Sebaceous Cyst

Sebaceous Cyst

I have a sebaceous cyst behind my ear that has been there for 15 years. It just got infected for the third time in that period of time. The first time was fifteen years ago and the doctor excised it, packed it and put me on anti-biotics, etc., etc. A couple of months later it got infected again and I just "popped it". It has not come back again until now. I am now trying moist compreses as you suggest but worry that it is to late. I just want to stick a needle in it and pop it again to get the infection out followed up with peroxide washes and antibiotic cream. I have read all that you have on this subject but see no mention of this idea. What would happen if I did this to speed up the healing process ??

Hi, Harold.

The doc who "excised" it, 15 years ago, was not careful to keep it intact while removing it. SO part of the lining remained and the problem has recurred over and over.

NOW, with this much history, it will be VERY difficult to remove it ALL and thus cure it. If I were you, I would go to a plastic surgeon and ask him to remove it "completely".

In the meantine, I hope you understand that hot compresses ONLY eliminate the infection flareups caused by the accumulation of sebum in the pocket of the cyst, not the cyst itself. it is never too late to use the hot compresses for that part (the only part helped by antibiotics).

Hope this helps.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
