Pilonidal Cyst surgery consultation

Posted by Marie [9479.7856] on September 08, 2009 at 15:29:57:

Hi there,

So I have a pilonidal cyst, and I've decided to persue getting it removed. I've had it for a few years now and it's always dully aching and i'm just sick of it. Anyway, I've made an appointment with a surgeon to get a consultation about it, and the woman on the phone told me he wants to do a full rectal exam at the consultation. Is it just me or does this seem unneccesary for a cyst that is located just below my skin and has an obvious sinus hole? I really DO NOT want to do this. I'm 20 years old and it seems like something I shouldn't have to do. My body my choice right? Any opinions on this? I have had my surgery referral sent to another surgeon in town because the woman on the phone told me the whole rectal exam thing was this particular doctor's policy. If getting a rectal exam is the only way to get a surgery on this, I'll just live with it, I suppose because I feel like this is NOT something some doctor can force on me for a fairly simple surgery.

Marie,
I would recommend you seriously consider resolving this without surgery. After reading the stories on this and other websites, it is clear that solving this without the knife is preferred.

I had the surgery done 23 years ago. My PC came on very quickly and I didn't do any research. I was/have been one of the lucky ones and it's not come back.

If you do eventually have the surgery, I recommend using the granular healing approach. Still, exhaust all other options and make sure you find a doctor that has had good success with this surgery.

Good luck,
Steve

Marie,

THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE SURGERY! As a matter of fact it is one of the most complex surgeries I have ever assisted with. You had better do a lot more reading about it before you actually have the surgery. You may decide that the 50% failure rate--even for the best of surgeons--is not something you want to get into.

Personally, I would do almost anything to try to live with it rather than risk the surgery making it worse.

Remember the adage: "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail." If you go to a surgeon he will have a surgical remedy.

Start with going to the pilonidal sinus archives and let us know what you learn. There are many things you can to to avoid flareups and things you can do to treat flareups if they happen anyhow.

Personally, I would not touch a pilonidal problem without at least doing a proctoscopic exam.

Walt

Well I would say the surgery is probably simple, it's the healing part that can be a nightmare, it is in area that does not heal well at all. First of all, the cyst may just be under your skin or it could be 3 or 4 inches deep and 4 or 5 inches long. I had a pilonidal cyst for 20 years, one of my sisters and one of my brothers and one of my sons and one of my greatnephews had one also. I had mine for 20 years, I fell into an exposed doorway on a pair of stilts, it hit me right on the tailbone, I swelled up so much the swelling came above my pants. I had to go to the ER one weekend and they told me what it was and they gave me some antibiotics and told me to come back when the swelling went down and they would operate on me. The antibiotics made it rupture and I never went back. Fortunately for me, the place where it ruptured never healed so my cyst kept draining although it would get infected about every 6 weeks and my wife would pull the hairs out and mash the infection out and I was good to go for another 6 weeks. My cyst became just a nuisance, I could live with it. I saw tobacco do something once that was really amazing so I thought, I will give it a try on my cyst, it has been gone for the past 16 years or so. When my son became infected he told his mom he had something hurting his tailbone, she looked at him and told me, he got's your cyst so I put tobacco on him and his has been gone for about 7 years now. I don't have a clue as to what happened to my cyst and I sure ain't going to let anyone operate on me to see if it is still there, I don't care, I can sit any way that I want and so can my son. After I put tobacco on it, the ruptured place healed up. I have some pictures of a woman with a PC that looked like a hernia to me, she used tobacco on it and you won't believe the wad of hairs that came out of it. If you will put your e add up I will send them to you. I was on the Pilonidal Board for a couple of years and I finally got some people to try tobacco and they kicked me off, said I was being disruptive. This thing can be a nightmare, there was one guy on the board there would said he had already had 14 surgeries and he was still having problems.

BTW, tobacco has been used as medicine since the 1500s.
