Sebaceous Cyst - Packing the Incision

I had a very large and infected sebaceous cyst on my back that a surgeon lanced on Friday. Due to the severity of the infection he said it was not a good idea to remove the gland at this time so he made an incision and cleaned it out.

He packed it with gauze and instructed my wife to wait 24-hours and then remove the gauze and repack it. We are supposed to repeat this 2 or 3 times a day for a week. Then in 6 to 8 weeks he plans to go back in and remove the gland.

We were planning to go on vacation on Wednesday, is it necessary to repack this often or is once a day OK? What are the dangers if we only repack once per day and is there any thing else you would recommend?

Thank You

Hi, Gene.

It will now be almost impossible for the surgeon to remove the cyst wall in it's entirety.

If I had ben doing this, I would have had you use hot compresses (along with possible antibiotics) until the infection was gone and THEN removed the cyst intact so I could be sure to get it all.

You have to follow the surgeon's recommendations so far as packing is concerned since all cases are different.

Hope this helps.

Walt
