Dr. Walt,
You said that once the cyst is large enough it has to be removed surgically. How large is large enough?
I have two cysts on my chest that have been there for years and they have discolored the skin to look like permanent zits.
Would the hot compresses work on a cyst that 3-4 mm in size?
Thanks.
Carl

Dear Carl,
This varies from person to person but, in general, that size is determined by the mechanical pressure of the stretching of the cell wall keeping the contents isolated from meaningful circulation. If the blood cannot got to the stored stuff nothing you do (short of surgery) can effect it.
In MY experience, anything larger than 1/4 inch is too big to get rid of except with surgery.

Hi..
I too have these cysts but mine are genital.
Would all of this apply the same?

Dear April,
Yes.
Also, if there is a weight problem, cysts in that area will be more of a problem to resolve.

Hi Dr. Stoll,
In regards to your previous postings about sebacious cysts,
I'm writing to ask you if you have ever seen or heard of them concentrating in a specific area. I myself get them occasionally on my back here and there, but I also have a problem with them mostly on my scrotum. I seriously have over 200 of them ranging in size from 1-3 mm and they have been around since the onset of puberty for me. It almost seems that I have some growing on top of others. No other area of my body is effected in this way, and I have no idea why they have centered down there. Is there anything that i can do about this? I'd appreciate your opinion.
thanks
Max

Dear Max,
If you look in the anatomy books at the library you will see that sebaceous glands do not form until puberty and that they are mostly located under the arms, in the groin area, on the face & a few on the back. Since that is where they are, one would expect that that would be where the cysts would form.
The more any area is rubbed, the more likely it would be for small damages to occur to the openings of the ducts. Since the most common cause presently known is the thickening of the secretion due to the essential oil deficiency, ANY damage to the opening of the duct would block the duct more quickly.
This is why people with weight problems have more of them: those areas are rubbed more AND an essential oil deficiency interferes with fat metabolism.
Also, a common place for them is underarm if people use anti-perspirant deodorants. Anti-perspirants work by causing the openings to the ducts to go into spasm. You can see why THAT would be a problem.
Once you have used the essential oils for about 6 months, write again with your experience. If you still have questions, write again.

By the way, Max, remember that the ones you already have now have a structural blockage of every duct where you have a cyst. That means that although we can keep you from getting new ones, the old ones may still stay there. We will just have to wait to see. Ones as small as you are describing frequently WILL go away but I cannot guarantee it.
