"shes had the papiloma virus .how do you get that ."

CONTACT. The papilloma virus can even pass through a condom.

"is it defintly from her might have had other partners..or he had some in the past maybe 5 years back."

It's possible that he contracted it from a partner in the past.

"also can he get anything from oral sex on her."

Of course! He can get the warts in his mouth, and they have shown up on people's vocal cords (not a pretty sight, believe me, and they have to be lasered off in surgery!).

"also can you get any thing else from oral sex on a woman even if its your wife other than a std."

Um, here's a list (these are STDs):

1) Gonorrhea.
2) Herpes.
3) Warts.
4) Syphilis.
5) HIV under certain conditions (she is bleeding, you can figure out the rest).
6) Hepatitis under certain conditions.

"how would a man get tested for the papiloma virus."

It is more difficult to diagnose in males. You need to check yourself carefully for a wart (even very tiny ones) and go to the doc and have them check as well. Pouring vinegar on the skin helps docs find them in women (the warts show up as white areas), but I'm not sure they do this in males -- I don't see why not.

The main thing to remember about HPV is that it can lead to cervical cancer in women, and the case I cited above sbout the guy who had them on his vocal cords developed throat cancer. There are hundreds of different strains of HPV, but some strains can lead to cancer.

Hello Lou,

Besides Renee's list there are STDs like chlamydia which are nasty if passed on to women.

HPV (human papilloma virus) does NOT pass through latex (condoms): what happens is that a lot of warts occur on parts of the genitals that aren't covered by a condom so aren't protected.

Vinegar used to be used to show up warts on both men and women, but these days there are tests for women that are more sophisticated and the vinegar isn't used for women in general. Best not to just check yourself for warts: needs a professional eye.

A healthy immune system can mean that even if you've been exposed to HPV you don't actually contract warts. Tests can show whether you've been exposed to the virus. Many more of the population have been exposed than have actual warts.

They can be VERY nasty and it's often forgotten with the lethalness of the HIV virus that safe sex is incredibly important for all the other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

HPV can be latent for years - surfacing when the immune system is down. 'Normal' ie not genital warts are also caused by the papilloma virus - there are a lot of types and strains. Some are a lot nastier than others.

The BEST place to go for information about STDs is publicly funded clinics usually attached to a major hospital. They're totally non judgemental and the professionals have seen EVERYTHING and are an even better bet for sound diagnosis and advice than many good GPs. (No insult to Walt, just a function of STD clinic doctors seeing many, many patients!)

I agree with this post with the exception about being able to test for the disease. I already had the virus but didn't know it... I was tested for STD's and came back clean. Just over a month later I started showing symptoms and I'd had no sexual contact with anyone, so I couldn't have contracted it after my test. In all the research that I've done, in addition to what my doctor told me, there is no way to test for this virus until you show symptoms. After the symptoms are gone, you still don't know if it's gone for good or just latent because they can't test for it.

It's a nasty disease, but your life doesn't have to end because of it. It just changes, and actually it can change for the better because of a more healthy way of living as a way to keep your immune system strong.

Good luck :)

Hi Lizbeth,

That's interesting - my gynie definitely did a test which showed I had been exposed to papilloma but have never had any signs of having contracted it. If you had the same tests they should definitely have shown exposure to the virus. Can you find out exactly what the tests were that they ran? He's a good specialist - I'll ask him what the story is. Maybe they're not standard tests or something.

Jane
