Sexual activity and Cystitis

A close friend (female) and I (male) only see each other 4 or 5 times a year because we live far away from each other. We are both in our late 40s. Every time we meet, after making love, my friend gets a fever, painful peeing, and normally needs a course of antibiotics to get well again. We don't think our love making is abnormal, although it is passionate. My friend has one slightly dysfunctional kidney, and has experienced this problem ocassionally thoughout her life. She had a sever episode when young. She drinks a lot of water all the time, has cranberry juice, is meticulous in her hygeine and mostly had two showers each day. I also practice good hygeine. I assume this condition is acute bacterial cystitis. From what I have read, the only solution I can see is less vigorous sexual activity (or abstainance), or continuous low doses of antibiotics for my friend. Can you offer any other solutions? Thank you.

Hi,
I've had similar problems to your friend in the past. Here's one very good suggestion I can offer - have your friend take a supplement called D-Mannose. Mannose is a sugar that prevents the bacteria that cause a urinary tract infection from adhering to the bladder lining. As a result, they can't hang around to cause the infection.
For more information and a purchase source, see http://www.alternative-bladder-infection-solution.com/ . This was recommended to me by my naturopath, and it really, really works. I take some for the day before and a little while after intercourse and haven't had a UTI develop since I started using it over a year ago (knock on wood : ).
There are other issues associated with recurrant UTIs that should be worked on, however, mannose is a simple preventative.
Take Care,
Daisy

Mannose is considered to be one of what's called glyconutrients.

Hi, Ken W.

I am interested in the mannose approach.

Since post-coital infection is a urethral problem, I would be very interested in anyone trying this and their results.

MY first suggestion would be more frequent exposure so that she would get more immune to your germs. My second would have been changing positions so as to avoid friction to the urethra.

Certainly the mannose would be a lot easier. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Let us know how you both do.

Walt
