Hi Walt: in our senior community, the number of people who
have had shingles is amazing--many still suffering pain.
Will Vit. C prevent shingles and if so how much? You once
mentioned 4 g. C ester daily. Most people here are willing to take one vitamin/mineral supplement per day but of course that isn't optimum to build up an immune system.
Just reread the intro to your book where Dr. Anderson
mentions adenosine monophosphate as a successful treatment
for herpes zoster but he doesn't state how much? Is
h. zoster the virus you can only get once? Is it infectious
in the blister stage? Thanks, Martha

Dear Martha,
Since I have found that 100 grams of intravenous vitamin C a day for 3-5 days will clear every case of shingles I have seen, I never bothered to learn about what Dr Anderson is describing. I already had the vitamin C in my office for other things and the stuff he is talking about only works for shingles-----so far as I know.
You could call him and ask him the doses & where to get the stuff. THEN, you will have to find a doc with an open mind enough to actually learn how to use it. Tell him I sicced you on him & won't do it any more. He is a WP (wonderful person) so I know he will do what he can to help you with this. His number is (206)776-9196. Let us know what you learn.
HOWEVER, having said that, by far the best thing is prevention and a serious wellness program is the best preventive. As you know, this is an abberrant response to the chicken pox virus and only occurs when the immiunity is lowered enough that it can cause the shingles.
It is NOT communicable since the person has to have had a CP infection sometime in their life for this to happen to them. Once one has had ANY viral infection, the virus stays in every cell of the body for the rest of that person's life. None of them are communicable during that entire time.
You will see this increasing incidence continue to accelerate for the rest of your lifetime. EVENTUALLY, people will be forced to understand that these "new diseases of the month" are happening because of the lowering immunity in the population and only the individual can do anything about that.

Hi Walt: thanks for your info. I do not have shingles
myself but when it is common to be talking to someone who
has been suffering from them, it would be nice to say what
prevents shingles that is fairly simple. People in general
do not have a clue that it is due to a lowered immune system. The older age group is pretty closed to alternatives though there are exceptions. I was hoping that one multi-vit/min and 4 g. C ester per day might
make a difference. Martha

Hi, Martha.
Even though I have found that lots of people would sooner DIE than learn something new, I am still amazed when someone suffering the chronic pain of shingles would not be ready to learn SOMETHING.
If they do NOTHING else, it would take at least 4 grams of esterified vitamin C, twice a day, to make a difference for a number of years. Eventually, however, the aging process would catch up to them and they would still get the shingles---------they would have just put it off for a few years with the vitamin C.
Certainly a good supplement would extend that protection even further. One of the cheap ones at the drugstore (the average has more than 35 additives in it ---besides the vitamins & minerals) would not help & might actually trigger an episode in those with environmental sensitivities.
I would recommend the best that Ethical Nutrients has to offer (same as Metagenics but in the healthfood store).

My friend has shingles and is in very much p ain. The doctor put him on Acyclovir generic for Zovirax 80 mg. ..a tablet every four hours for five days. The medicine is all gone and he is still in pain. They are on his buttocks and testicle.
The doctor said they are very contagious. Any vitamins that would help? Thank you so much.

Dear Ellen,
First of all shingles is NOT catching at ALL.
You are probably confused about the technical names of Herpes Zoster (shingles) and Herpes Simplex (Herpes) which IS very contagious.
The key to the diagnosis in this case would be if the rash was on only one side (the hallmark of Zoster is that it does not cross the midline) it could be Zoster. If it is on both sides, it is NOT "shingles" but Herpes Type II.
The most effective treatment for shingles I know of is 100 grams of IV vitamin C daily for 3-5 days. Another extremely effective treatment is mentioned in the Forward of my book.
For Herpes, taking at least one gram of lysine twice a day and avoiding foods with arginine in them will stop most cases in a week. The usual course of untreated Herpes is about 6 weeks. Unfortunately, if this is Herpes, it will be recurrent & is contagious for the rest of that person's life (whether broken out or not) and suitable protection should be used during intercourse.
The practice of the wellness "stool" and at least 500 milligrams of lysine twice a day---while avoiding foods with arginine (see your library)--- will eventually (in about 6 months) prevent any recurrence. In about a year it will no longer be transmissible---so long as the person continues the wellness program.
