Hi,
I have a very odd problem. Lately I've been having a difficult time going to sleep at night because when I lie down I feel my throat gets tense and almost narrows my breathing. It feels achey like someone is cutting off the circulation. I immediately have to sit up and try and adjust my pillows. It's been happening the past few nights and I often find myself losing a few hours sleep because of this problem. Eventually somehow I manage to fall asleep but this scared me and can't figure out why it is happening. Any ideas???

It may be allergies. Check your room for dust. Even dust mites as well. Especially if its only happening at night and when you are going to bed. You can buy dust mite pillow covers they work well, and if you have carpet in your bedroom, try something else for a floor covering, also get your curtains drycleaned regularly.

I had that same weird thing happen to me. I had started taking Coral Calcium and a couple of nights when I was at the maximum dose that throat thing happened to me. Along with it I got a big huge lump feeling in my throat right at that u curve in the bone at the base of the neck in front, like I was trying to swallow a rock. Also, I got horrible chills under the skin - I don't know how to explain that one. To keep it under control, I had to sit up. I quit the Coral Calcium and haven't had it since, so I think it is an allergic reaction. Why it only happens when you lay down to go to sleep, I don't know. It really scared me too.
Did you get any other symptoms? Have you taken or done anything differently?

If it's not anxiety or allergies of some kind, how is your weight? This is a fairly common problem with those who are overweight. If so, do a search for OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) and look for some solutions. A word of caution: a lot of people are trying to make money with all kinds of gadgets for this. Exercise, a healthy diet, and SR are the best long term solutions.

Hi, Michelle.
I, too, would need to know how old you are, do you have any cardiac diagnoses, and if you are seriously overweight. How high do you have to prop yourself up to be comfortable?

Do you actually have problems with getting enough air into your lungs when this happens? Observe your breathing, and see if you have any difficulty taking a deep breath.
Does adjusting your pillows help ease the tense feeling in your throat, or is it just sitting up for a moment that helps. Do you need to be propped higher to ease this symptom, or do you lie down flat again?
Does your heart rate change when you get this feeling in your throat? If it is being caused by anxiety, a surge of adrenelin may cause your pulse rate to increase.
Not being able to breathe is a scarey feeling, but you may be getting so anxious about it that you're causing some of your own symptoms. Try diverting your mind by saying a prayer over and over, or try "singing" a melody in your head. You may be able to train yourself to relax, and then it's easier to sleep.

First of all I would like to thank everyone for all of your helpful comments on what this odd situation could be. Well, yesterday while at work I started having difficulty breathing and found myself forcing myself to breath deeply cause I felt like I wasn't getting enough air. It scared me again & with this problem I got myself more worked up and made it worse. I opted to go to the ER and have it checked out being it was such a hot day out as well (98 in NYC yesterday). The ER checked everything possible including blood pressure, blood oxygen level, heart rate & a neck X-Ray to check for any blockages. Everything checked out completely normal thank god. Still I had a sore throat from the episodes. I'm 29, a little over-weight but not too bad and no prior history of any heart or any medical problems in the past. In the end I was told it was a possibility of a few things but nothing specific: the heat/weather could have caused this, possibly anxiety and last he mentioned stress (and thought with me working in NYC could attribute to it as well from 9-11 anxiety issues). I was told to take Motrin for the inflamation of my throat and to follow up with my primary doctor. Last night I did sleep well thank god so I'll have to remain relaxed, stay in cooler areas & just monitor this and hope it goes away. Either way I do have peace of mind it is nothing life threatening now though. Thanks for such a great online bulletin board!!

Thanks, Michelle.
With the workup that you have had, by far the most likely cause of this is dysautonomia due to stored stress-effect in the hypothalamus. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms. Get busy discharging this by the diligent practice of SR.
Let us know how you do.

Just to follow up with my breathing problem, I did follow up with my primary doctor and found out that I have Acid Reflux and that may have caused the problems I was having breathing when I lie down at night. I am currently on Prevacid for a month and after that a follow up with my doctor again to see how I am doing. I haven't had the problem ever since. Thanks again Dr. Stoll for your help!
