sleep apnea, burning pain

I have been suffering since Nov. The burning pain started in my fingertips and has since spread all the way up to my shoulders and sometimes neck. I had carpal tunnel release surgery 20 years ago an my Dr. says it's not that. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea central and obstructive and also insomnia. I am on a cpap machine taking ambien 10mg. and vicodinhp for pain. The ambien doesn't help because the vicodinhp only makes me feel goofy. It doesn't take away the pain. Can the pain and the sleep disorders all be connected? The pulmonary Dr. seems to feel that if I develope a normal sleep pattern and start sleeping good the pain will go away? What else could be causing me to have such immense pain? I work full time at a very physical job and I need to be able to control the pain. I would appreciate and advice.

I would like to know if anyone has my symptoms. it started in my fingertips in Nov. of last year. It is a burning stinging pain that is now in my fingers, hands, forearms 24/7. It sometimes goes to my upper arms and neck. It is not carpal tunnel. I had nerve release surgery 20 years ago. The pain is immense and even VicodinHp doesn't help. I would like to hear from someone who has similar problems and if they were able to get help. My doctor's are baffled. I also have both central and obsructive sleep apnea and insomnia. I have stiffness all over and pain off and on all over. I am 51 years old and was in good health and had energy prior to this. I have had arthritis for years but it's nothing like this pain that is getting worse.

Until Dr. Stoll answers you should go to the bracing archives and read all of the posts there. Then, you should read the article on the home page of how to be healthy and then go to the glossary and look up wellness.

Maybe if you start the skilled relaxation right away, you might notice some relief in a short period of time.

Hi, Linda.

Listen to Donna E.

This problem is pretty obvious.

No the answer is not obvious. The doctors have no answers yet so how could you and Donna? They are testing me through a process of elimination. I have neuro-muscular problems that need to been diagnosed. All I wanted was to hear from someone who has similar problems.

Linda.

30 years of clinical experience with problems like thia--and the fact that your docs are not finding a reason that will help--lets me know.

I applaud your decision to keep going down the path you are on. Perhaps when you have suffered enough you will try what we suggested and get well.

Good luck.

Perhaps we will still be here when you decide.

Walt

Dr. Walt, this burning thing is another bracing symptom? Like Linda, I have the burning thing too, often associated with times when my "interstitial cystitis"(sic) is severe or when I have a panic attack, although sometimes, like now, it just happens out of the blue. It just woke me up at 2:30 am. I have started working on the IC with SR and physical therapy.

Out of curiousity, and because I feel better when I understand what is happening, how does bracing cause this - does it effect the nerves or blood vessels somehow?

Thanks very much.

Hi, Trudy.

How about a demonstration? Just stand in the middle of the room and hold your arms out horizontal to your shoulders and keep them there as long as you can AND BEYOND. The first thing you will begin to notice is "burning". This is just voluntary "bracing".

You have been doing this in an involuntary way for years.

Hope this helps you to understand.

My burning, stinging sensation is 24/7 since starting in my fingertips and spreading over the months since Dec. of last year. It turned to pain in June-July of this year. 2 weeks ago a tingling, burning sensation started in my toes and feet. I have had all over body stoffness for years and it's getting worse.Even with the Duragesic patch and VicodinHP the burning, stinging sensation never leaves. I am going to be tested for Parkinson Disease My Grandfather had it and my sister has dystonia. The puzzle pieces which are too numerous to write here are all coming together.I remember my Grandpa drinking a fifth of whiskey a day to keep the pain at a threshold. Linda Morgan
